Welcome!
Dear Haggerty Families, If you are a new or returning Haggerty family member, WELCOME Soo Dhawoow! Khosh Amadid! Marhaban! Bienvenidos! Swagatum! Dahan-mesika! Bienvenue! Anquan danah mahtu! Svagat! Huānyíng! Pryvet! Irasshaimase! Välkommen! Fáilte! Atithi tarīkē svīkārya! Fogadtatás! Hacheli! Willkommen! Καλωσορίζω! Benvenuto! Eoseo Oshipsio! Chào đón! Bem-vindo! Shalom! Voghjuyn! Welkom! That’s “welcome” in 27 languages, and I’m sure I’ve missed a few! If I did, or if I made some errors, please let us know. This year the staff and I will continue working to improve culturally responsive instructional strategies and practices. With that we are working hard to pronounce names correctly and make sure your languages our represented here at Haggerty. We are deeply committed to examining the practices that promote access and learning for all of your children. In order to do this work well, we need to build our skills. To date 26 Haggerty staff have attended a four-day training in Disruptive Equity and Education Project (DEEP). There is an urgency we all feel and in order to confront the many needed changes within the educational system and in order to do that well, we have to build our expertise. Dr. Darnisa Amante is the founder of DEEP. You can check out the DEEP website here: digdeepforequity.org In the DEEP work, Dr. Amante has reminded us that we can’t have equity without empathy, and in order to have empathy we have to be able to listen actively. We will continue to work on active listening with all of the Haggerty students this year and take steps to deepen additional culturally responsive practices. It’s important that you know the WHY behind this important work we’re engaging in with your children. In my adult years I can’t recall a more important time for our children and community to be working on EMPATHY. Sometimes it seems that as a country, we’ve forgotten how to listen, especially when we don’t share the same beliefs. Regardless of our own personal feelings and opinions – we are poised in this climate, to join our children in this work. We must remind ourselves as adults how important it is to consider the thoughts, feelings and opinions of others, especially when they are different than our own. As Leo Tolstoy states, “Everyone thinks about changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” Thank you – I know you’re eager to join us in the work in service of your children. As always, thank you for sharing your children with us! We look forward to a great year! Warm regards, Nancy

City Sprouts Corner Stephanie Budd is the CitySprouts Garden Educator at the Haggerty School this school year! She is bringing almost 10 years of growing experience and science knowledge to the position. Most recently, she spent 3 years designing original curriculum and teaching middle school science classes in The Gambia. With that school, Stephanie started an on-site garden that enhanced student learning and was ultimately managed by students. The bulk of Stephanie’s farming know-how was developed throughout 6 years of leading afterschool and summer farm programming at the Chicago Lights Urban Farm in Chicago. She managed the Children's Garden, but also taught youth cooking classes with farm produce and led a creative arts program inspired by nature. Stephanie’s favorite things to do are get her hands dirty, bake with pumpkins, and learn new farm puns!
Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) The Haggerty PTO is a group of parent and teacher volunteers working together to build community, to support our teachers and students, and to help Friends of Haggerty raise funds for the benefit of our entire school. Some of the events we help organize each year include a Danehy Day Concession Stand (September), an International Potluck (October), Family STEAM Night (Feb), the Talent Show (March), a Used Book Sale (May), and a Staff Appreciation Luncheon (June). The PTO is open to everyone! We’re always looking for new ideas for events, and people willing to contribute in ways both big and small. Our projects provide volunteer opportunities for all types of schedules and skills. Interested? Please attend one of our meetings that take place in the conference room just off the main lobby, from 8-9AM. Coffee is provided and younger siblings are always welcome! Interesested or have questions? Please email Lissa (LGalluccio@cpsd.us) Our first meeting of the year will be Tuesday, September 24 from 8 - 9AM. We will provide an overview for the year and begin planning for the International Potluck on October 24. We hope to see you there!
Race Matters The Race Matters: Courageous Conversation group meets several times a year. We have group discussions (based on readings, or videos) and have guest speakers. Race Matters Mission Statement Our mission is to explore, through dialogue, racism and its impact on our kids today, in school and at home; to explore our own personal beliefs around race; to explore ways to talk about race related issues with our kids in an age-appropriate way; and to get ideas on practical steps we can take as individuals to confront racism and to take this conversation beyond the theoretical to action. We strive to make this work and our group as welcoming and as safe as possible, by building relationships, listening and asking questions. We trust the wisdom of the community to guide us in this process. Questions? Ask parent Meredith Moore (meredith.moore@gmail.com), Rochele Jones (jones.rochele@gmail.com) or Jennifer Richards (jenniferrichardspt@gmail.com).
School Advisory Council (SAC) A school council is a representative school based committee composed of the principal, parents, teachers, and community members. School councils are required to be established by each school pursuant to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 71, Section 59C. With teachers, parents and community members working together, the school council supports school-based planning and goal setting for school improvement. The primary responsibility of the school council is to advise and assist the Principal with activities associated with the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and to help develop any projects arising out of the SIP that the Principal identifies as beneficial to the successful functioning and development of the school. The school council meets each month during the academic year. As mandated by the MA Open Meeting Law, school council meetings are open to the public who are invited to attend. The council does not address any issues regarding individual students. Any public address regarding individual students is not appropriate. Meetings: School Council meetings are scheduled once a month. Exact meeting times are not yet determined, but if evening, childcare is provided. Questions? Ask Lissa (LGalluccio@cpsd.us)
Friends of Haggerty (FOH) What is “Friends of Haggerty" Friends of Haggerty School, Inc. is the name of a private non-profit corporation formed by Haggerty parents in November 2005.
