Intermediate @ Newbury School
Developing learners with DRIVE
Personalised Learning Newbury School’s intermediate programme uses a personalised learning approach that creates learners who drive their own learning, are motivated, engaged and ready for high school. This approach encourages students to take ownership of their learning and to utilise their own passions, interests, talents and aspirations to achieve success. Teachers and learners work in partnership to design learning experiences that are appropriately paced and with the right level of challenge. A range of different approaches are used that include: personalised learning, workshops, co-operative learning, traditional group/teacher time and one on one learning. This way our students become life long and passionate learners who are motivated, engaged and want to learn and challenge themselves. We integrate the use of technology to support and enhance learning as we endeavour to personalise learning for each child. Technology provides the tools that allow learners to have more choice and control over how they learn and demonstrate their new knowledge and skills. High Expectations To ensure our learners continuously strive to be the best they can be, both academically and socially, teachers and learners co-construct high expectations. By having a hand in co-constructing these expectations, it helps ensure that they are owned by each and every learner. Learner Voice Including learner voice into all aspects of classroom culture and the wider school is an important part of our teaching and learning philosophy at Newbury School. Co-planning, making decisions and taking responsibility for outcomes, both for themselves and the groups they are involved in, supports our learners to be active members and leaders of our school and with their own learning. Hands On & Active Learning in our intermediate space goes well beyond the classroom with many experiences designed to provide active, hands on learning. This helps to connect our learners to the wider world and opens their eyes to the many possible career pathways. Hands on learning also allows learners to apply their knowledge in a real context and deepens those connections. Maths takes on a whole new meaning when your calculations determine if your fitness station stands or falls over due to the sums you and your team made! We make a real effort to understand the adolescent brain and their needs. Fitness, sport and hands on activities form an important part of our programme and learning.

Leadership Academy Each year the school appoints a head and deputy head boy and girl as well as house captains for our four houses. These students are closely mentored and take on a number of responsibilities including planning and organising assemblies, the school’s prize-giving and our annual formal dance, all real and authentic leadership opportunities. All of our Year 8 learners also attend the National Young Leaders Day - an inspirational and motivating day for everyone. This day aims to develop student leadership and lifelong goal setting to support our learners in reaching their full potential. Additionally, every senior student is expected to take on leadership responsibilities throughout the school. These include: Road Patrol, Charity Team, Enviro Team, Tech Team, Physical Activity Team, Peer Mediators and Librarians. Innovate, Design, Create Innovate, Design, Create or IDC happens every Wednesday morning here at school and consists of Hard Materials, Food Technology, Music, Science and Drama. IDC is in place of Manual or Technology for learners in our intermediate. Learning experiences range from using our laser cutter to innovate, design and create Bluetooth speakers, to creating sweet and savoury delicacies in our recently upgraded kitchen. Music has seen our learners use percussion instruments to create pieces of music. BYOD and 1 to 1 Devices Technology provides a variety of ways to support traditional approaches to learning as well as opening up new and different ways for our learners to create, learn and share their new knowledge and understanding. We want to ensure that ALL our intermediate students have access to technology as they need it, removing any barriers for them to learn. As such, we are committed to continuing our one device per learner programme where learners are provided with their own laptop or can choose to bring their own devices from home to support their learning. DRIVE Thursdays Our aim with DRIVE Thursdays is to provide unique learning experiences for our Year 7 & 8 learners to help them develop and enhance their DRIVE values. Alongside developing our DRIVE values, our learners continue to develop their literacy, numeracy and inquiry skills. These fun challenges are relevant , practical and learner centred. There are a range of challenges and big ideas over the course of the term, some stand alone days and others where the challenge will require several weeks to complete. Each DRIVE Thursday is ended with sharing, discussion and reflection. At the end of the challenge, learners are required to consider how they used their DRIVE values over the course of the challenge and set goals of which values they can further develop.
