(Jack Miller in “The Heart of a Servant Leader”) “I came away convinced that the gospel becomes powerful in our lives and in the lives of others when we love them enough to suffer for them. Life for others comes out of my dying (2Co.4:12). We don’t naturally die for others; we don’t want to get involved in their problems and certainly not in their messes. We do not want to be seen as foolish and frail in their eyes, and yet this is the way of Christ’s power.” (Abraham Kuyper) “There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, ‘Mine’!” (John Owen) “God has work to do in this world; and to desert it because of its difficulties and entanglements, is to cast off His authority. It is not enough that we be just, that we be righteous, and walk with God in holiness; but we must also serve our generation, as David did before he fell asleep. God has a work to do; and not to help Him is to oppose Him.”
Presider: Jim Jung Preacher: Jim Jung CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 66:1-12 “Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.” Selah Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There did we rejoice in him, who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations — let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.” SILENT CONFESSION Let us prepare our hearts by privately confessing our sins to our loving Heavenly Father. Be honest before God, and bear your heart and soul to Him. Thank Him and Praise Him for the good things; and confess those sins you knowingly and unknowingly commit, even the sin of omitting the good that you ought to have done. (Silent Private Prayer) ASSURANCE OF PARDON (In Christ, our sins are covered!) 1 John 1:6-10 “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” PRAYER OF ADORATION AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Heidelberg Catechism – Lord’s Day #17 – OF GOD THE SON 45. What benefit do we receive from the “resurrection” of Christ? First, by His resurrection He has overcome death, that He might make us partakers of the righteousness which He has obtained for us by His death. Second, by His power we are also now raised up to a new life. Third, the resurrection of Christ is to us a sure pledge of our blessed resurrection. 46. What do you understand by the words “He ascended into heaven?” That Christ, in the sight of His disciples, was taken up from the earth into heaven, and continues there in our behalf until He shall come again to judge the living and the dead. 47. But is not Christ with us even unto the end of the world, as He has promised? Christ is true man and true God. According to His human nature He is now not on earth, but according to His Godhead, majesty, grace, and Spirit, He is at no time absent from us. 48. But are not, in this way, the two natures in Christ separated from one another, if the manhood is not wherever the Godhead is? Not at all, for since the Godhead is incomprehensible and everywhere present, it must follow that it is indeed beyond the bounds of the manhood which it has assumed, but is yet nonetheless in the same also, and remains personally united to it. How did Jesus exercise His given authority over people? Since Jesus is returning to glory which He had “before the world existed”, what can we say about His humility on earth? What was the most helpful/challenging/encouraging part of the sermon for you? PRAY FOR OUR MISSIONARIES THE HANS Joshua and Christina Han are back in Melbourne with their two sons. Please pray for them as they find rest, catch up with loved ones, prepare for ministry and mission work ahead, the uncertainty of timing of returning to their mission field due to COVID-19, and their team members that have remained in South Asia to help aid the affects of COVID-19 (for their health and safety). May God continue to spread the gospel and His word in spite of the challenges of the current situation. PRAYER FOCUS FOR OPPRESSED PEOPLES THROUGH IJM AFRICA & EUROPE Praise God that we have been able to help support survivors and their families who are struggling to afford food during this time. One family in Uganda gave us this message to share with IJM supporters who provide us with the means to help in this season:"I am so grateful for the aid entrusted to me in this tragic situation, for it got [to] me in a helpless moment. My children send you greetings too, we are very happy for restoring hope in our life." LATIN AMERICA Pray for Project Phoenix, a group of resilient survivors of sexual violence against children in La Paz, Bolivia, as they work on their strategic planning process in the coming months. IJM Bolivia is supporting this survivor-led group, who have not lost their momentum despite COVID-19. They are now meeting virtually to map out how they will be using their voices and sharing their stories to engage with different key actors within civil society, the government and the public justice system to bring change in their country. Pray for wisdom and safety as they continue putting their dreams in action.
1. Adoration Praise the Father for His attributes and actions 2. Confession Confess and acknowledge your sinfulness 3. Thanksgiving Thank Jesus for His salvation 4. Supplication Ask the Spirit to transform you
