WHAT'S LOVE?
They say all is fair in Love and War but what they don't say is you need to know the rules of engagement. So let's talk about standards! Let's discuss how having standards can save you a world of pain and regrets, while experiencing joy and bliss. One has to be careful not to lose themselves while falling in Love and entering new relationships. Furthermore, recognizing that there is a fine line between being in love and self-love can help in the long run. If you're in love then you'll do anything for the person that you are in love with but when you love yourself you'll do anything for the person that stares you in the mirror every single day. When in love you tend to forget yourself, you tend to forget to love the person that you see in the mirror staring back at you everyday. Yet, you never forget to love the one you're with. This is why it is important to have rules, set of standards, something to live by, a way to remind yourself that you are the prize. Ladies did you hear that? You are the prize. Gentleman did you hear that? She is the prize! The bible says "A man that finds a wife, finds a good thing." So repeat after me "She is the prize!" So let's discuss the standards we should set for us all to live by when engaging in the art of love. Some standards could be; I don't date men with kids, I date internationally, I see myself with someone who reminds me of my mother, my daddy says a man is always supposed to open the door for his lady. The list can go on and on. When it comes to the standards, we could set plenty of them. There are tons of rules we could live by but where is the fun in that. Just a few simple and easy to remember standards will do. What standards do you set when it comes to love and being in love? Do you follow your own rules? Do you live by your own standards? Or do you just throw them out like day-old bread and put your all into your new love unconditionally to see where it goes? Whatever your style is for falling in love, dating and relationships, there is no right or wrong answers, only results. The real question is are you getting the results that you need? Are you happy? In this section, we will explore all of these questions and much, much, more. The objective is to get you, the reader, to develop your own rules of engagement. I encourage you all to become a part of a community that shares and embraces ideas about love, life and everything in between. Welcome to PlayTalk, the Editor's Edition. And I am your editor Venice Richards. Send in all of your love and relationship questions that you want me to explore. Email all submissions on love and relationships to partiesbyvenice@gmail.com

This was the beginning of a beautiful addiction. I left the store with 4 items: the pocket book, wallet, pumps, and matching sneakers. I don’t even want to tell you how much money I spent that day, but I was happy as a pig in shit!! I had just purchased a limited edition LV collection. When I got home, I decided just to tell my husband about the bag and the wallet. Keep the shoes and sneakers a secret for myself. So, I hid the shoe boxes in the back of my closet. Every week I took a trip to Americana mall on Sundays, exploring the other stores but always ending up at my favorite spot: Louis Vuitton. The salespersons knew me by my first name. I would walk in with my friends and they would bring us champagne. I got special invitations to all the presales. Jodie once told me one of the customers asked her if I was a rapper’s wife or girlfriend. Lol. Really? As if those were the only black women who could afford such items, or that black women could not earn their own money. I took it in stride. I would literally shop until I dropped (a few thousand dollars). Those were the days! Buying couture pieces: jeans, bathing suits, luggage, jewelry, etc. Yeah I had it pretty bad. Hiding all my stuff was beginning to be a pain in the ass too. When we decided to buy a house, I had to put my priorities in order. No more shopping sprees. We had to come up with a down payment for this house! When we moved into our new home, my husband could not believe how many boxes of shoes and clothes he had never seen. No big argument. No big blowout. Just an understanding of the new priorities. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still a shoe whore and every now and then I go down to the hoe stroll and cop a pair of shoes from my favorite spot.

When determining the look of your outdoor living space, decking is only half of the equation. In many cases, it's the deck railings that are most visible and the design element that makes the first impression. "Railings serve a necessary safety function, but they also play an important aesthetic role," explains designer Alison Victoria, star of HGTV's "Windy City Rehab" and "Rock the Block." "They frame an outdoor space and define the setting's style and personality." Following are five fresh ways to frame up your outdoor space for maximum enjoyment and curb appeal: Industrial inspiration Industrial styling is all the rage, as homeowners seek to replicate the clean lines and modern looks found in today's hottest hotels, restaurants and craft breweries. In backyards across the country, this commercial-to-residential trend can be seen in the increased use of aluminum railing styles that deliver sleek sophistication. One such example is Trex Signature Railing, which offers a range of designs, including horizontal rods, mesh panels or glass inserts, in addition to traditional spindles - all with the low maintenance and durability of aluminum. Mixed materials While railing matched to the decking remains perennially popular, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of customizable design possibilities afforded by new railing materials, styles and finishes. Visual interest can be achieved by juxtaposing materials such as composite, aluminum, glass and brick. For an eye-catching color contrast, consider pairing chunky, white posts with slim, black balusters. Or, mix classic and contemporary looks by using a traditional, wide railing to frame the deck while installing a slimmer railing style on staircases. View-optimizing options If you want to enjoy your view, thin balusters finished in black are a great choice as they tend to optically blend into the environment, putting more visual emphasis on the natural surroundings. Glass panels are also ideal, of course, as are cable and rod rail designs. Conversely, if you have nosy neighbors or a view you'd rather minimize, opt for railings with thicker posts and more tightly spaced balusters to enhance privacy. Form and function In certain cases, deck railings can be as practical as they are pretty. One of the biggest trends is "cocktail railing" or a "drink rail." This approach uses a deck board as a top rail to create a flat ledge at just the right height for holding drinks and plates. This level surface also offers an ideal resting spot for potted plants, candles and other decorative accessories. By using boards that match the decking, you can achieve a look that complements your deck, while making great use of space. Inviting illumination Augment the beauty of your railing and lengthen the time you can spend enjoying your deck with discreet outdoor lighting that can be integrated into railing posts and caps. Not only will lighting set the mood, it also adds safety and security. Consider LED dimmable options to maximize energy efficiency, such as Trex Outdoor Lighting, which also are weatherproof and salt-air proof - ensuring they will last for years. FRESH WAYS TO FRAME YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOE WHORE
Since I can remember, I’ve always had an obsession with Louis Vuitton. Last summer I was digging in my closet trying to find a pair of shoes. When I got to the back of the closet, I came across my huge collection of LV shoes. Looking at them tucked neatly away in their brown boxes and dust bags, my palms got all sweaty. I began to have flashbacks to the time of their purchase and my heart beat fasters. My name is Stephanie Jones and I’m a shoe addict. Around 2003 my career began to take off with the opening of my first salon: Strands Hair and Spa. Money was no object at that time. The salon was successful and my clientele was enormous. I was married; my husband had a great job and he never questioned me on what I was earning. He took care of home and I took care of the shop. I always had a thing for high heels. Being 4 foot 11, I was always the shortest in my family as well as among my friends. So, my shoe fetish started as soon as I could walk in a pair of high heels. My best friend had a shopping habit as well. She introduced me to the Americana mall in Manhasset. That’s like the Rodeo Drive of Long Island. I told her I wanted to buy myself a new Louis Vuitton bag, so we set off on our shopping spree! I walked into the LV store and immediately a petite sales lady named Jodie greeted us “Can I help you ladies with anything?” That’s where it all began. I told Jodie that I was looking for something different, not your traditional print. She led me over to the counter and pulled out an olive green wallet. It was beautiful. She disappeared behind the wall and came back with a dust bag. She pulled out the pocket book to match the wallet. It was made of a canvaslike material. I was in love!! “We also have the shoes to match,” she said pointing over to the shoe section. Like a moth to flame, I was drawn to the olive green pumps with the gold buckles.

With the forever changing restaurant scene, new and unique recipes are being thought of on a daily basis. My family restaurant in Rosedale has brought Manhattan upscale dining to Southeast Queens with it’s mouth watering cuisine called Eurosoul. Eurosoul is Mediterranean and Moroccan with Caribbean and Soul Food influences. The journey of creating Eurosoul started with hiring Chef Alex Askew, a top New York African-American chef who spearheaded a menu focusing on healthy, cost effective, and delectable meals. It’s been our vision to bring healthy and uplifting food to our community so Eurosoul Cusine was our answer. Menu items grab many ingredients and cooking methods from its many influences to create menu items such as our Pistachio Crusted Lamb Chops, Pomegranate Jumbo Shrimp on sugarcane skewers, Shrimp and Lobster Saffron Pasta and our Eurosoul Kabob (Kafta Beef, Jerk Pork, and Barbecue Chicken). To accompany our meals, we created specialty Pa-Nash cocktails like the Panash Dash, Pasion Fusion and our fan favorite PaNash Rum Punch. Within its first year of opening Panash got rave reviews with one being from Pulse Magazine naming our Fig Glazed Jumbo Wings as “18 Things You Must Taste Right Now”. This along with other reviews of the sort had people coming to try Eurosoul Cuisine from all over, not just New York. With incredible food and drinks to match, Panash prides itself as a family run business having great service and great food for its guests. We look forward to you exploring our unique cuisine with us and you too can Live Life With a Dash of Panash.

Pearls are the perfect, malleable medium for today’s always-changing fashions. But don’t mistake some of today’s modern pearls with Grandmother’s simple strands. By adding a little high tech, color and carvings, you take a classic piece of jewelry straight into the 21st century. With these changes, today’s pearls are appealing to a new generation that is discovering their beauty and luster, while enjoying some amazing new characteristics. If you think that pearls can’t be high tech, you’d be wrong. One designer in California, Chi Huynh of Galatea Jewelry by Artist, is known for creating numerous variations on the cultured pearl. His latest invention (patent pending) is called Momento Pearl. To create this innovative piece, Huynh inserted a tiny near-field communication (NFC) chip into a cultured pearl. When you use it in combination with the company’s proprietary Galatea App, you can upload voice and text messages, images, and web links. Simply tap the pearl against an Android phone to hear the voice message and see what has been uploaded. Want a little color in your pearl? Huynh has also patented a cultured pearl with a colored stone bead inside. When the pearl exterior or nacre (pronounced “nayker”) is carved, the color is revealed. Described as one of the g greatest developments in pearl culturing since Kokichi Mikimoto invented the process in the early 1920s, the “Galatea Pearl” is one of the rarest pearls in the world. They are available as pendants, earrings, and rings in 14k gold. If pearls as art is more to your taste, why not carve pearls like marble to make miniature sculptures? Hand-carving pearls have always been a hallmark of Huynh’s Galatea jewelry designs. More than 75 percent of the company’s jewelry use carved pearls rather than the more traditional smooth-surfaced pearls. Normally, pearls are valued for their color, luster, (the “shine” on its exterior), uniform, and blemish-free surface. Huynh revolutionized traditional beliefs about cultured pearls, calling his carved pearls, “Pearls without Boundaries.” They may not be for those who prefer a classic pearl, but that’s what makes these new pearl designs so appealing to a younger audience. And speaking of that younger generation, the company’s “King Pearls,” are large, dark Tahitian pearls with unique carvings depicting dragons, dolphins, crosses, and other modern designs. All in all, pearls are enjoying a renaissance and are finding a place center stage with fashionistas, and reemerging from the jewelry box. And Galatea is just the company to do it. The Eurosoul cuisine is truly unique but many of our recipes are simple and easy to make. Our Mediterranean Flatbread is a fan favorite appetizer that can be easily made at home with only a few ingredients. To start, spread your favorite hummus on a piece of pita bread or any bread you prefer. In a sauté pan, cook a handful of spinach with some cranberries and don’t forget to season. Once cooked place the sautéed spinach and cranberries on the bread and spread evenly. Sprinkle cheddar and mozzarella cheese on bread and put into a 350 degree oven for five minutes or until the cheese is golden brown. You may leave off cheese for vegan option. From start to the table, this tasty recipe is 15 minutes so give it a try and enjoy eating with a Dash Of Panash!

Whether it's reprieve for families in self-isolation, support for those on the frontlines of healthcare and essential businesses, or keeping at-risk populations safe, now is the time to come together - while staying apart - to support one another. Here are four simple ways that communities can take care of each other - all from their phones, computers or other devices. 1. Gaming and virtual hangouts: Board games, video games and puzzles are a great way to bring friends and family together - even with hundreds of miles in between. Set up a virtual game night with a friend or send your online buddy a few extra digital gaming rewards for your favorite game together. And, with families now on extended spring breaks, it's the perfect time to surprise kids with an egift card to add funds to their favorite online games. 2. Grocery delivery good will: With so many facing uncertainty with their job in this challenging time, lack of time to shop or concerns about being inside of grocery stores, consider finding a way to bring the groceries to them. Gifting grocery delivery to your friends and family allows them to purchase what they need while staying out of harm's way. Sending a grocery gift card or digital gift card to the people in your life gives them the freedom to shop when they can - even when stores are closed. If you're going grocery shopping for a friend in need, or want to help a time-strapped healthcare worker, consider including a special gift card that you can find at check-out or the retailer's Gift Card Mall so that they have some additional resources to pick up essentials, or treat themselves to keep their spirits up. 3. Supporting restaurants and supporting others: As your favorite local restaurants shift to take-out, curbside and delivery-only models, there's an opportunity to not only support restaurants, but also to provide support for those in need. When placing an order for yourself, think about others in your life that could use a meal or gift card for takeout and perhaps send one or two to a friend on the hospital frontlines, first responders or someone you know in an essential retail role who could use a ready-to-eat meal after a long shift. 4. Streaming togetherness: Keeping your distance doesn't need to mean you miss out on watch parties. We all have a favorite show or movie recommendation, so send the gift of a digital movie download or surprise friends and family with the gift of a subscription to your favorite streaming service. Then, plan a night with friends and family to watch your favorite show, and gather around the computer for a virtual watch party. Don't forget the popcorn! Online resources including retailer websites or GiftCards.com are convenient, easy ways to find egifting options that can reach your friends and family quickly. Many retailers and restaurants are seeing the benefits of gift options during this time. To learn more about easy digital gifting, visit www.giftcards.com for more ideas.

Yvonne "The Motivator" Mann Sits Down With Cosmetics Queen Vera Moore
When you are asked to write a column in an upcoming magazine you jump at the opportunity. When you are informed you will be one of 4 contributing editors, you prance around the house like a Peacock. If that wasn’t enough, being asked to interview the person that would be gracing the cover, yep God is truly smiling on me I get to flex my writing muscles. The cover interview would have to be bold, funny basically one of the best interviews I have ever done. I tell myself OK you got this! Until I hear…. “And you will be interviewing Vera Moore” I literally almost fell off my chair, my response was that of a little child who just receive a really great gift, I screamed. Quickly composing myself,I begin to explain that Vera Moore was my idol. I entered Beauty School in 1981, hoping to one day to meet the woman that revolutionized the Cosmetic Industry for Black Women. Here I am some 30 years later having the most delightful conversation with my idol, it just don’t get any better than that. Oh yes it does , when your idol has impacted women for over 40 years with the desire to help others open doors for other black women to do the same, it goes without saying Vera Moore is not only an Icon but a Humanitarian in all sense of the word. This interview is the result of a 2-hour conversation, I was informed, entertained and truly amazed by the wonderful woman who was so gracious to speak to me about the empire that carries her name, Vera Moore.
COVER STORY: MY INTERVIEW WITH AN IICON
by StatePoint
MANN: Ms. Moore Where did the idea of a cosmetic company begin? MOORE: As an actress, on Broadway, movies and TV they did not have cosmetics that matched my skin tone. I either looked too red, greasy, too chalky, or it would definitely be the wrong shade. When NBC decided to create the first black family on the Soap Opera, Another World. I wanted and knew I had to do something.I mixed products and colors trying to get a look I was happy with. I would go to the drug store buying different shades, I’ve always had an eye for color, mixing them in my kitchen, taking them to the studio, and directing the makeup artists “use this”! Sometimes I would say to myself “who is that girl in the mirror? It wasn’t great, eventually through trial and error at least when I saw myself on national television I could recognized myself. If that wasn’t enough, I had to deal with lighting. Did you know lighting is different for people of color? I didn’t know that then. There was a void that needed to be filled especially for darker skin Black women. We were not represented in the cosmetic industry. That’s why my heart jumps for joy when I saw the darker skin women being represented as Oscar winners, Viola Davis, and Lupita, etc.… I only hope it’s not just for a season or a trend. I pray now they realize the depth, breath and scope of beautiful black women. These experiences were the genesis of Vera Moore Cosmetics. MANN: Once you decided to start your cosmetic company, being an actress I’m sure you had a lot of help backers, and supporter? MOORE: I didn’t have any backers. I had the total support of my “moorefabulous” husband Billy, and my family. MANN: Ms. Moore you stated you wanted darker skin Black Women to feel better about themselves, but makeup is designed for women to look beautiful right? MOORE: NO! Black Women are beautiful just look around you. Are you kidding me? The problem is beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, not in their eyes. What the industry perceived as beauty definitely was not a darker skinned black women. We were made to feel we were “not” beautiful. Our Lips & nose were too big, hips too wide, butt too big, hair not right. What is considered right?OMG look at the industry now.I have never seen so many white people with braids, dreads, etc. When you go to the islands, 99% white people have their hair in braids, I know it’s convenient, but it’s also beautiful. It’s OK! Emulation is the highest form of flattery. In some workplaces, they are still telling us how we can and cannot wear our hair and what is acceptable. They are paying for what God has given us from the beginning, Beauty! We were programmed to think otherwise. When Vera Moore Cosmetics initially was developed, my goal was to change the mindset of women to empower them. The darker skinned black women who would constantly come to my counter in Green Acres Mall, Valley Stream and whisper “do you have any colors for me”? They were not comfortable with their beautiful darker hue, and the major cosmetics companies didn’t care. My cosmetics changed the game my response was “not only do I have colors, this complete line was developed just for you”. I knew I had to ensure that the darker skinned Black Woman had a product that not only enhanced their beauty but empowered them.

Planning to follow a trendy diet like keto or simply want to eat right? There’s good news -- grilling can be a great option for you to kickstart eating healthier. Indeed, the American Heart Association recommends it. “Grilling is a year-round way of life, bringing together family and friends,” says Jeff Thiessen, president of Pit Boss Grills. “Luckily, those watching their diets can still get healthy foods with the fun and flavor of a backyard barbecue.” Use these tips to make healthier meals prepared on the grill: • Let your spices do the heavy lifting: You can add exciting and bold flavor to any recipe using seasoning mixtures. Spice up foods like veggies or lean meats with seasoned rubs or marinades for amazing flavor without all the calories. • Eat fresher: Round out recipes by including fresh vegetables. For the best flavor and highest nutritional value, look for locally-grown produce. Vegetables make an excellent addition to any meal as grilled kabobs or chopped up and tossed in your favorite chili. • Be versatile: A healthy diet is a versatile diet. Look for a grill offering multiple cooking options, including baking, roasting and smoking, such as Pit Boss Grills. Their 8-in-1 versatile grills allow you to do it all with one-of-a-kind hardwood flavor. • Try it yourself: For a delicious spin on a favorite barbecue classic, try this Healthy Hawaiian Pulled Pork, right from the Pit Boss playbook. Ingredients: • 2 cups aloe leaf juice • 1 teaspoon coriander, ground • 2 teaspoons cracked pepper • 1 teaspoon cumin • Dash of salt • 4-6 garlic cloves • 1 3-inch ginger, fresh • 1-2 limes • 4 cups no sodium added chicken bone broth • 1/4 cup olive oil • 4 teaspoons paprika • 6-8 pounds pork shoulder/butt • 1/2 sweet onion • 2 packets Truvia • 2 tablespoons Truvia Nectar Directions: • Set grill to “smoke.” Once the pot catches, turn the grill up to 300 degrees F. Make sure your flame broiler is closed, you’ll want to use indirect heat. • Add spices to a bowl. Set aside. • Grate ginger into a separate “wet ingredients” bowl. Mince garlic cloves and dice onions into the same bowl. Juice limes and add chicken bone broth, aloe leaf juice, Truvia and Truvia Nectar. Mix and set bowl aside. • Add the oil to your Pit Boss Cast Iron Roasting Pan and coat the bottom and sides. Place pork inside. • Coat pork with dry rub. • Pour wet ingredients around the pork. Cover with lid and set on the grill. • Check every couple hours, basting if needed. When internal temperature reaches 195 degrees F (after 6-8 hours), it should easily start to pull apart. Don’t pull apart the whole shoulder yet. • Remove roasting pan from grill and set aside for 1 hour. Remove lid to help speed cooling. • Once cooled, shred pork into a separate bowl, removing fat. If adding marinade for additional flavor, skim fat off the top and discard. • Pair with fresh grilled veggies, delicious fruit or make tacos or salads, and voila! To shop grills, as well as find cooking tips, grilling resources and additional recipes, visit pitboss-grills.com. By following the keys to healthy grilling, you can create guilt-free meals.

GRILLING TO GET HEALTHY
COVER STORY
MANN: Wow that’s a lot, me being a dark chocolate chick I appreciate your desire to develop a quality product for a population of women the cosmetic industry had forgotten. The pressure from other companies must have been great, as the younger generation says” the haters must have been hating”? MOORE:They hadn’t forgotten them. They never considered them. Yes, the pressure was great! Here I am this black girl in the late 70’s with an unknown new company entering a white industry in an all-white mall. I was not taken seriously, it was hard work they thought I wouldn’t last. My location in the Green Acres Mall was to be a store on the first floor, instead it turned out to be on the 2ndfloor, a small storage room/bathroom it was a struggle and almost didn’t happen. I’m sure with all the challenges, they thought this would not be a reality, but it happened. I thank God it happened. Although, it was on the second floor in the food court, not the best location up there with the smell of French fries. I was determined to make this opportunity work. Turning lemons into lemonade; too many women were depending on me. All I could imagine was the beautiful Black Woman that would be empowered and inspired by coming to this mall seeing products that embraced their beauty. I realized I was a “David” against “Goliath”, Vera Moore Cosmetics (VMC) was here to stay.VMC was in Green Acres Mall for 25 years. MANN: Was Green Acres Mall the first place VMC were sold? MOORE: No, Vera Moore Cosmetics was first sold at my husband’s salon,Billy’s Place, Hillside Ave and 168thSt Jamaica Queens. Billy was a celebrity hairstylist in Harlem and then moved to Queens. We wanted to provide women with a one stop shopping experience, Hair, Makeup and Skincare, all at one location. The shop was gorgeous, also offering pedicures, facials, nails long before we allowed the Asian take over MANN: What makes VMC different from other cosmetic lines for women of color? MOORE: We were seeing women with skincare issues trying to cover it up instead of clearing it up.That’s why our mantra is “Skincare is the Foundation; Makeup is an Accessory.” We were ahead of our time. The other two make up lines that were developed for black skin at the time advocated covering up skin imperfections. I would repeatedly explain to women “that is not a mold it is a blackhead.”Yes, they did cover it up and VMC had to deal with cleaning it up when they removed their makeup. Unfortunately, due to lack of education, some women were only interested in instant gratification, “The Makeover” not a skin care regimen. MANN: You have inspired so many women what has been your inspiration, motivation and foundation? MOORE: My mother was a domestic worker and my father was a porter with a third-grade education. Obviously no formal education however as far as I’m concerned, they had a PHD in wisdom. My parents were my foundation raising me to have faith in God, taking him at his word, trusting him throughout everything I do. I remember how exhausted my mom would be from cleaning houses. My parents were and still remain my inspiration, motivation and solid foundation. I wanted to rise above the circumstances I grew up in.I wanted to motivate women, to encourage them to obtain economic empowerment and community wealth building. I wanted them to know the importance of creating a job instead of going to one.
(Continued on page 23)
MANN: Your faith had to be strong to endure the struggles you had with the Green Acres Mall? MOORE: Yes.My faith has always been my foundation. I couldn’t have make it without my strong faith in God asking him daily for strength to confront and conquer my fears and doubts. It was 3 years of back and forthwith Green Acres Mall.I was determined to break the color barrier I did not have time to be emotional, I had to be strategic having a goal and an objective. Eleanor Roosevelt said it best “A women is like a tea bag, you cannot tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water” You have to be prepared to work hard. I mortgaged my home believing I could make it happen, defeat was not an option. My difficulties fueled my desire for success. MANN: Ms. Moore, how do you balance all that you do, business, speaking engagements, personal life? MOORE: Great question. No such thing as total balance! Balance means everything is equal, that doesn’t happen. You have to prioritize, this is a process.I know this is easier said than done, I had to learn to say NO, that was huge for me. MANN: What has been your greatest achievement? MOORE: My location in Green Acres Mall. Breaking the color barrier. Helping our people understand their worth. This was never about money or self-gratification. My drive was to expose little black girls to dreaming, for them to “Yes I Can” They needed to know their dreams could become a reality. I know I was blessed to have had great parents not everyone is not that fortunate. I enjoyed being a mentor and a sponsor, it is makes me proud to be honored in my own backyard by people that look like me. It’s not about awards it’s the impact on women, Black Women! I can’t leave out speaking at the Essence Festival which is one of the biggest gatherings of progressive black MANN: Ms. Moore, you helped young men and women obtain employment how did that correlate with selling makeup? (Trust me I cannot even write this response to give it justice, just know she let me have IT!) MOORE: The opportunity to be an advocate for employment for young men and women that looked like me. This speaks for itself. As the young women and men would walk by, I would approach them asking “are you applying for a job in the mall? When they answered “yes” I would tell them how them “your first impression is a lastly impression” giving them advice on how they should look for an interview. If we don’t take responsibility for teaching our children who will?I was truly blessed to be in that position. MANN: Ms. Moore this is a family business how has this impacted your relationship with your daughter Consuela? MOORE: A family business is not easy. I’ve learned a great deal and still learning to trust and let Go!When you first start a business you nurture it like a new born baby, you it hold tight. Consuela is like me head strong, we agree to disagree. She is an extremely hard worker, I couldn’t make it without her. VMC is 40 years strong, however when external challenges and problems arise, we stick together like gorilla glue! lol.

The weather is getting warmer, we are anxiously awaiting the magical day where we can pull out our favorite summer dress, those cute sandals and that sexy bikini that we have been eyeing all winter. After a long and stressful spring, we are all ready to dip our freshly pedicured toes into a summer filled with fun and adventure. The six-pack abs are one the most sought-after summer wardrobe accessory. However, if you are like 80% of Americans, you may suffer from some form of back pain making it difficult to do many of the abdominal exercises. Dr. Tameka Duncan PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, owner and physical therapist, of Vitality Sport and Rehab in Clarksville, Tennessee reports that “back pain is one of the most common injuries treated within the clinic…The abdominals, more specifically the transverse abdominis and internal obliques, are key contributors to the body’s stabilization system. Strong abdominals are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they play a significant role in the stability of the spine helping to reduce lower back pain.” Here are some great exercises that will help you tighten those abdominals while protecting your lower back.Be sure to seek medical or professional advice prior to trying any of these movements.

1.Work on your credit with a professional (like me!) You credit report is like your adult report card.Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act of 1971 & other credit laws, you can remove and dispute anything that is inaccurate, obsoloete, or erroneous.Removing these negative items helps to boost your score 2. Pay down your debt Not what’s in collections, your debt has been sold off.It doesn’t matter if you pay that because it’s already accounted for every month that you didn’t pay and the fact that it went into collections.I’m talking about your credit card utilization.Paying it off and keeping it below a 30% utilization will help t increase your score. 30% of your FICO score is based on the amount that you owe. 3.Add a positive trade line A positive trade line can be anything like adding your rental history to your credit report, yes you can do that and be credited for every month that you have paid your rent.Adding a secured credit card and still keeping your utilization below 30%, being added as an authorized user to someone’s credit card who is in good standing helps as well 4. Make two payments per month Creditors only report balances to the credit bureaus once a month.Having a big balance can look like you’re overusing your credit.Pay at least double or triple your monthly payment.Paying only the minimum goes towards the interest, and that’s why it looks like your balance is never going down.Split your payments into two.Look at the due date, and pay both 3 days & 15 days before the due date. This tricks the system and brings your interest rate down and is more effective in paying down your debt. 5. Increase your credit card limits! If you’ve maxed out your $500 credit card and get a limit increase of let’s say $1,000, you’ve instantly cut your credit utilization rate in half.Don’t spend any of your new credit. This also helps you with the debt to income ratio which accounts for 30% 6. Pay your bills on time! Paying your bills on time accounts for 35%! Also keeping your credit utilization low, not having more than 2-3 inquiries or applications helps as well.

It’s common knowledge that excessive skin exposure, not only to the sun but also to environmental pollutants, can promote inflammation and lead to skin damage. But Phyto-C Skin Care, a scientifically-based skin care company, combines the latest pharmaceutical science with natural antioxidants to develop skin care products that help restore and protect the skin. Phyto-C Selenium in C Serum is engineered to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promote skin health, and protect the skin against future damage. The serum includes a blend of clinically-tested antioxidants, notably selenium and vitamin C, both of which have demonstrated skin care benefits. Selenium works in part by neutralizing free radicals and other compounds that can damage the skin, which can help prevent the development of fine lines and wrinkles. The vitamin C component of the serum helps improve skin discoloration caused by environmental exposure and promotes an even skin tone. Additional key ingredients in the serum include vitamin A to encourage the production of new, healthy skin cells, and vitamin E for its hydrating and antioxidant properties. In addition to improviForng the appearance of photodamaged skin, the serum is formulated to help brighten the skin and can be used to treat areas of scarring and stretch marks. The Selenium in Vitamin C Serum formula is supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute for the prevention of ultraviolet-induced skin cancer. The product is lightweight and designed for quick and easy skin absorption. Phyto-C Skin Care was founded by Dr. Mostafa Omar, who pioneered the development of the form of topical vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) that can be used in skin care products. “It’s not how many products we’ve sold, it’s how many people we’ve helped,” Dr. Omar says on the company website. The website also reflects the company’s customer vision “to empower, restore, and instill confidence in all those who have lost it due to their embarrassing skin imperfections.” Phyto-C products are available in more than 21 countries and are appropriate for all skin types. Each product has undergone testing in clinical studies. more information on Phyto-C and skin care, visitphyto-c.com.
MANN: What are some tips you to give to women regarding skincare and makeup? MOORE: I will let you speak with my daughter Consuella, a licensed esthetician, she is the expert MANN: Consuella, thank you for joining us, what are your favorite skincare products. CONSUELLA: My two favorite products are our Serums and Exfoliates. Our Serum adds vitamins and essentials nutrients to help skin maintain a youthful glow, exfoliating removes dead skin cells preparing the skin to absorb the benefits of a serum and moisturizer. VMC is predicated on creating healthy skin. If the skin is flawless the makeup application will be minimal. MANN: Consuella, what is the biggest mistake women make when applying makeup? CONSUELLA: Too much make up! Less is more, makeup is to enhance your look not change it. When your makeup has a dry, cracking appearance or it is running down your cheeks it too much. Start with a light touch, it is easier to add more then to remove too much. Too much makeup is not attractive especially for daily wear. Let me explain, day to day makeup is to enhance not to be overdone. When you go to the mailbox there is no need for concealer, bronzer and or highlighting, just go get your mail. (Yes we did have a good old fashion laugh at how some of ya’ll are overdoing this thing called makeup application but bless your heart it’s not your fault YouTube is da devil) MANN: What is a must have VMC product every woman needs to have in her makeup bag? CONSUELLA: Your make up bag at home or in your pocketbook? MANN: Um good question, there’s a difference? I guess it is, I have one bag so let’s discuss the pocketbook makeup bag, the on the go must haves? CONSUELLA: Face Powder and a Lip Stick or Gloss. If you happen to start perspiring, pat face dry then just reapply your powder lightly. This will maintain your look and decrease the shine that is caused by slight perspiration. Your lipstick or gloss should be reapplied after eating or drinking. MANN: What advice would you give women to assist them in not committing makeup no no’s? CONSUELLA: Red lips lined in black pencil, blinding highlighting and or poorly blended contouring. Blend, please blend so that you will not appear gray or muddy. Remember there are different looks for daytime, evening and formal. Your makeup should reflect the time of day and the occasion. Lashes should fit the frame of you face, they are like the cherry on an ice cream Sunday. You see the cherry first but it makes you want more. Lashes should not overshadow the face but compliment it. If you can’t apply lashes well…..stick to mascara (this to me was everything and yes I was lol) VMC has a great mascara with fibers, it thickens and lengthens. Don’t forget to clean your lashes! Please do not apply mascara to cover what you have not cleaned, WE CAN SEE IT! We see the glue from the previous application, for those of you that wear strip lashes, WE SEE IT.

Ingredients: 2 Eggland's Best Eggs (large), poached 1 large sweet potato 2 teaspoons olive oil, separated salt and pepper 1 cup ground sausage 1/2 cup salsa 1 avocado, diced Directions: Heat 1 teaspoon of olive oil in a medium pan over med/high heat and brown the ground sausage. While the sausage cooks, fill a large pot with a few inches of water and place over medium/high heat until it just starts to simmer. Crack eggs individually into a ramekin or cup and create a gentle whirlpool in the water. Slowly pour the eggs one by one into the water and leave to cook for three minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towel. While the eggs poach, spiralize the sweet potato using a spiralizer. Heat the other teaspoon of the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add in the sweet potato noodles and cook until they just begin to soften, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer the cooked sweet potato noodles into a large bowl. Drain the ground sausage and add to the sweet potato noodles. Toss with 1/2 cup of the salsa. Divide the noodles and sausage between two bowls, top each with diced avocado and a poached egg!

Spring cleaning is a tradition that often includes dusting, mopping, decluttering and organizing homes for a fresh start. Many families may be cooking more while home right now, so this is a great opportunity to refresh your kitchen staples by filling the fridge with foods that support a healthy diet. Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner shares her top five fridge essentials to boost overall health and wellness: Leafy greens Leafy greens are a powerhouse of nutrients like vitamins A and C, potassium, calcium and iron. They're great for soothing chronic inflammation and increasing energy levels naturally. Some tasty and versatile leafy greens to add to your grocery list include spinach, arugula, kale, chard and watercress. You can use these as a salad base, add to sandwiches or wraps, create tasty side dishes or incorporate a handful to your favorite meal to add supercharged nutrition. Eggs Eggs are an important source of essential vitamins and nutrients, but not all eggs are created equal. Eggland's Best (EB) eggs offer superior nutrition compared to ordinary eggs at the grocery store, such as 25% less saturated fat, more than double the omega-3s, 10 times more vitamin E and six times more vitamin D. EB eggs also contain more than double the vitamin B12 compared to other eggs, which may help maintain energy levels while giving your house a spring makeover. By simply incorporating EB eggs into your family recipes, you can easily boost the nutrition of your favorite meals. Greek yogurt Yogurt is a trending health food, but some yogurts offer greater health benefits than others. Reach for plain Greek yogurt on your next trip down the dairy aisle, because it has twice the protein and less sugar than regular yogurt. Not to mention, its thick, creamy consistency may help you feel fuller longer, reducing the likelihood of extra snacking. Create your own parfait by choosing plain yogurt and add natural sweetness with fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey. Plain yogurt also makes a great base for healthier dressings and other tasty recipes. Oats Fiber is an essential part of any diet because it fills you up, helping you to feel more satisfied throughout the day. Although not technically stored in the fridge, oats are a fiber superstar and a must-have for every kitchen because they offer an affordable and accessible way to get a healthy dose of daily fiber. For example, when eaten as part of a balanced breakfast, oats help curb cravings and keep you feeling satisfied until lunch time. For a simple breakfast on-the-go, blend oats into your favorite smoothie. Berries All berries are rich with antioxidants that keep your heart healthy and your brain sharp. Berries add great flavor to breakfast foods, salads and more, not to mention snacking on a few throughout the day is a great way to naturally satisfy a sweet tooth. Frozen berries are a wonderful alternative when fresh aren't available, providing similar health benefits. You can mix into a smoothie, yogurt, or thaw for baking! To celebrate your fridge makeover, explore new recipes featuring these nutritious ingredients, such as this Eggland's Best recipe for Sweet Potato Bowls.

FINALLY A WAY TO "FAKE IT!"
(CONTINUED)
Hell, my husband even started buying me LV pieces on special occasions. But, at some point, you have to make do with what you got! Ladies don’t think you have to tuck away your vintage pieces. So what if they’re a little dated? In fashion, everything repeats! Remember when I was looking for those shoes before the flashback? Well I came across these fabulous denim wedges, for which of course I have the jacket and bag to match! They were a little battered, so I took them to my local shoemaker and he and I put heads together. He redesigned the shoes. They came out super sexy. Check out a few of my vintage pieces! Remember: Louis Vuitton never goes out of style and never goes on sale. Happy Shopping!

As we spring into Summer and continue adjusting our internal clocks, we must be prepared for those mornings when sleep doesn’t come naturally – a condition known as “Daylight Savings Hangover.” The good news is that there is a way to look refreshed and awake – even if your sleep schedule is in the dumps. Tip 1: Shut it down – electronics that is. Before going to sleep, shut down all electronics – that means TV, computer and, yes, your blackberry. These all are stimulants for the brain, and if you’re answering emails in bed at 10 p.m., you’re going to have a difficult time getting to sleep. Hit the power switch at least an hour before bedtime. Tip 2: Get up … NOW! Once the alarm goes off, get out of bed immediately. Snoozing is not sleep; it’s just prolonging the inevitable. Tip 3: So now that you’re up – do something. Try a morning workout to get motivated and feel energized for the day. Take a quick run or hit an early morning spin class. Be sure to challenge yourself first thing and then see how much easier your morning commute feels. Tip 4: Hydrate. Great-looking skin isn’t just about what you put on it, but also what you put in your body. Skip that morning cup of coffee, which can be dehydrating, and drink a glass of ice water instead. The cold water will not only give you a kick in the morning, but also help hydrate skin, leaving it looking and feeling refreshed. Tip 5: Wakeup and fake it! Use a hydrating and stimulating makeup like Almay Wake-Up Makeup– a favorite of celeb Kate Hudson. This product contains essential minerals and ingredients, such as cucumber and aloe, which soothe and hydrate skin. It also has first-of-its-kind encapsulated water technology – once the powder touches your skin, it releases a cooling sensation that gives you an added boost in the morning. Tip 6: Do NOT skip breakfast. You’ve worked out, you’ve hydrated, you’re looking gorgeous. Why deny your body the nutrients it needs to keep it looking and feeling refreshed by walking out the door without grabbing a quick bite?

I recently slept with my fiancé’s brother. We were alone and had too much to drink. It was a mistake and won’t happen again. Should I tell my future husband before or after the wedding?
ANSWER: Remember, a closed mouth doesn’t get fed! If you want your money, speak up or forever hold your peace. Just be respectful when you ask, after all this is your Uncle.
My Uncle borrowed $500 and said he’ll pay me back when he gets his taxes. He got the money 3 weeks ago and bought my cousin a car, but I’m still waiting. Should I say something or wait til he offers me my money?
ANSWER: Exes are “Exes” for a reason, so don’t let yourself get worked up wondering about what could happen. If their relationship really bothers you, have a conversation with your girlfriend in a calm and comfortable setting. Trust us when we say “Don’t do it immediately after the two have been together” because the results just won’t be good. If your girlfriend gets defensive, angry or minimizes your feelings, end the conversation immediately and (maybe) consider giving each other some space to decide if and what you both want from your relationship.
WINNING
ANSWER: If you wait and tell your “Future Husband” after the wedding, you’re guaranteed a “Future Ex-Husband” not to mention a really mad Mother In-Law! You were bold enough to be with his brother, now be brave enough to tell the truth before saying “I Do!”
My girlfriend spends a lot of time talking to her ex by phone, Facebook and they work together. Her ex is a girl and I’m a guy. I want to tell her their relationship makes me uncomfortable without seeming insecure. What do you suggest?

She leveled the playing field, destroyed the stigma that darker skinned Black Women were not beautiful. As a darker skinned Black woman, I thank you Ms. Vera Moore for all you have done, I pray for your continued success in all of your upcoming endeavors. Ms. Vera Moore you rock girl, yes you do!
MANN: What are the benefits of a daily skin regimen and with warmer weather approaching should the regimen change? CONSUELLA: The face should be wash twice daily, morning and night; cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer based on skin type. In warmer weather your moisturizer should be light you don’t want to clog your pores. Keep toner handy to spritz your face after perspiring, wipe off and reapply moisturizer. Instead of foundation try a bronzer or a tinted moisturizer. If you have puffy eyes, apply an eye gel at bedtime MANN: Being a woman of a certain age, what VMC products would you suggest I use? CONSUELLA: Depending on the skin type an anti-aging serum and super firming cream. VMC Signature Collection has an array of products formulated to reduce the effects of aging, for a more youthful appearance, hydration and protection is so important.
