It is with great enthusiasm that I write this column. Our new GM/CFO, Tim Smith, has developed a robust 2020 budget that addresses many areas of our updated strategic plan and positions the Club for success. The budget and plan capitalize on the talents of our dynamic staff and build exposure to our beautiful course and clubhouse in effort to build an exceptional experience that will grow our membership. We all know the potential of our Club and I am happy to announce that we now have a Sales and Marketing Director, Ms. Sean Gamble, who will work with our Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Ally Johnson, to aggressively increase our exposure and membership.
The Membership and Communications committee will be work closely with our Sales and Marketing team to update and execute our plan to grow membership. This committee, led by Brett Charbonneau (Vice President), is working on reviewing all current memberships offerings to ensure all benefits are clear to potential members and the value of each can be clearly compared between membership types.
Under the leadership of Joe Strout, Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, a complete risk assessment and club inventory will be completed this year. Joe has created a very comprehensive outline that includes all areas of SGCC from the clubhouse to water infrastructure. This assessment and inventory are critical to create a long-term budget includes all repairs and maintenance. I cannot thank Joe and the Finance Committee enough for taking on this huge task.
Our Neighborhood Committee, under the leadership of Larry Gilliland and Patty Engelen (co-chairs), has created an excellent plan to promote awareness and education about the value SGCC brings to the community. Their plan is already underway and they have arranged a meeting with the SOA Board and created a SGCC brochure to be distributed throughout the community including the Town Center and Sierra Canyon Aspen Lodge.
Social Activities Committee continues to be very busy adding value to membership through non-golfing events and initiatives. The Committee has many events already planned for 2020. They are looking for volunteers to take on the lead for reoccurring events like monthly Bingo. Please contact Brandon Games, Board Secretary and Social Committee Chair, for more information:firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are continuing our planning and efforts to make this year our best yet! I encourage members to attend our February Board meeting to hear about our recently-approved 2020 budget and the direction of our Club. Here’s to 2020!

It’s a new year and new beginnings.I’m excited to be a part of creating your vision for 2020. While I have the pleasure of knowing a few of you, I am enjoying meeting each of you daily. I appreciate the very warm welcome into your community.
Your new sales and marketing team is kicking the year off with a focus on Corporate and Equity membership sales, as well as increasing our concierge referrals from our local hotel/casinos. Ally’s institutional knowledge and her enthusiastic demeanor is a welcome asset to our efforts. We plan to create lasting relationships with industry and community leaders in the Truckee Meadows, so we are top of mind for anyone considering a premier golf location.
A little about me: I have been a Nevada resident for more than 40 years, and have worked in all aspects of sales, marketing and hospitality throughout the state. I have also enjoyed a 20-year stint as a statewide lobbyist from 2000 until now. Prior to joining Somersett, I had a contract lobbying practice where I represented a variety of industries in government relations through the legislative, executive and local branches of government.
Prior to lobbying, and shortly after graduating from the University of Nevada, I worked as a sales executive for the Reno Convention and Visitors Authority until 1989. I then spent ten years in Las Vegas working as a public relations account executive consulting for a number of businesses in Las Vegas and Reno, including Howard Hughes Corporation, Summerlin, Pardee Homes of Nevada, Silver Legacy Resort, and multiple restaurants that were opening in Las Vegas during the boom of the nineties.
I look forward to seeing each and every one of you in the days to come.
The holiday season was a success here at Somersett. We sold out for the Member's Holiday Party as well as the Brunch with Santa. Make sure you check out all the upcoming events at The Grille like the SLGA Champagne & Chocolate and the Member Appreciation Happy Hour. If you're interested in sponsoring our next Happy Hour, please contact me at email@example.com .
February is the last month of our Equity Winter Special. If you or someone you know is interested in joining our equity membership, now is the time! Sign up today and pay no dues until March 1.
Our trial membership has slowed down for the season, as we currently have no preview members. It had a success rate of 26%, with 75% of the conversions going to our equity membership.
I'd also like to welcome our new Director of Marketing and Membership Sales, Sean Gamble. She's quickly becoming a part of the Somersett family due to her charismatic personality and extended knowledge of marketing throughout our community. Check out her section to learn more.
Finally, I want to remind you that any referral you send to the club will earn you a gift card for either the Golf Shop or The Grille. The winter season offers various activities outside of golf for you to bring friends and family to; I encourage you to take advantage of it.
Let's make 2020 Somersett's best year yet!
Thank You Members!

Happy New Year! From snowpack to sunshine this winter has been typical for our region. Moisture levels have been good so far, but we need more precipitation. We are going through our final stages of equipment repair, preventative maintenance and detailing. These are some of our seasonal highlights for 2020.
Spring aerification will be the week of March 30th, with the fall dates the week of August 31st. Other seasonal cultural practices will be verti-cutting and topdressing greens and spraying of PGR’s to continue our Poa control on greens targeting seed head suppression. Remember the more bentgrass we can have on our putting surfaces the better off they will be. Tees and fairways are on the same verti-cutting schedule, followed by an herbicide application to control the weeds. Finally, we apply a wetting agent to the fairways to help prevent against summer hot spots, along with daily irrigation monitoring. Those are just a few activities we have planned and as always, I ask everyone to fill their divots and repair your own ball mark plus another.

It is exciting as we are inching closer to golf season.Another Holiday Season has been put in our memory bank and February brings thoughts of sunshine and warmer temps, green grass and plenty of golf. Are you thinking as to how you are going to attack the 2020 golf season? What are your goals? If improvement is to be made what can we do to assist in getting you started now?The golf staff has been busy teaching both outside and inside - utilizing our beautiful indoor short game arena. If it is just fun you are looking for, rest assured your SLGA President Sheri Harrell and SMGA President Curtis Chan along with their respective boards are preparing for our best golf season yet.
The SLGA has successfully introduced a lady’s Thursday Winter Putting League. We have had 13-16 attendees the past few Thursday mornings for tips from the pros, head to head matches and hole-in-one winners.I anticipate better putting from all these ladies this coming season. The league will continue through March. There is still time to join in the fun as we start a Saturday Winter Putting League – 9 Saturdays with play conducted between 10:30AM – 12PM.Start date is February 9.Sign-up on Clubster.
My wife Cecile and I played host and hostess for our first ILT Trip to Cabo del San Jose, Mexico in January.Destination – Secrets Resort at Puerto Los Cabos.Thirty-eight of us enjoyed the beautiful adult only Secrets Resort, three days of Nicklaus golf, lounging poolside, fabulous ILT and resort service, non-stop Alaska Airline flights and all-inclusive food and beverage - just the ticket for a cold January.Highlights included celebrating special occasions like the O’Brien’s 30thWedding Anniversary and Cecile’s birthday.Jim Murdoch notched his 4thHole in One on the 6thhole at Club Campestre while Stuart made his 6thHole in One on the 13thhole at Puerto Los Cabos. Both were thrilled to be at an all inclusive!Bruce and Kay O’Brien were the top money winners in the golf games.John and Marcie Crowell took the tennis title.Bob Davies landed the first Dorado on the fishing trip – Roy and Stuart followed.James and Roxanne Wells were by far the best dancers. It was a blast.Thank you to all who attended.I hope you will join us in 2021 – details to come out in May.
On February 15 we have Breakfast with the Pro featuring guest speaker James Welsh – former Head Athletic Trainer and Faculty Member at San Jose State.James will cover common golf injuries relating to the hands, wrists, elbows and back.He will also cover conditioning for golf as we age as well as taping methods that get you on the course while nursing injury.
We look to a new World Handicapping System being implemented as of January 6, 2020.The new system is designed to be much more inclusive to all players of all abilities. Most players should see a slight drop in their handicap initially as only the best 8 of 20 scores will be used to derive a handicap.Handicaps will now be computed daily as opposed to every two weeks.Possibly the biggest change is the maximum score allowed for handicapping purposes to be a net double bogey. The golf staff will be happy to assist with questions regarding the new system.
We look forward to a new cart fleet in April. We have 5 of our 2008 golf carts (orange) left and plenty of our 2015 golf carts (hunter green). If you or your friends are interested the member pricing for the 2008’s are $1700 while the 2015’s are $2800.
As we approach season I want to remind you of our Annual Guest Program. If you enjoy bringing guests, family, friends, clients, etc. on a regular basis please consider our Annual Guest Program. For an annual fee of $150, the $80 guest rate is adjusted to $50 all year for you.Let us know if that program is of interest to you and we will sign you up.For those that have enrolled last year we will automatically bill you in March unless we hear otherwise.
Lastly, I want to thank Scott and Muriel Garrison & Doug and Carol Reimer for their donation of two televisions for our short game arena. They replace the damaged one and we have a spare.
Please look to Clubster for upcoming events. We anxiously await the new Clubster version in late May which will alleviate many of our communications going to junk mail folders for those with certain email addresses.

Greetings From the SLGA
As 2019 came to an end, the SLGA held their annual Brunch and Ornament Exchange at The Grille. There was no shortage of laughter while the ladies unwrapped their ornaments. These lovely ladies not only gave and stole ornaments between one another, but also started a food drive at the clubhouse. SLGA President Sherri Harrell organized this through the Food Bank of Northern Nevada where the clubhouse was able to donate 174 pounds of food. This is equivalent to 145 meals for families in our community. This contributed to the 91,000 children, seniors, veterans, and families that the Food Bank of Northern Nevada feeds in our region every month. To finish off the year, they also donated to The Children's Cabinet, Eddy House, Step 2, Junior Connection, and McQueen Girls Golf.
