Upcoming Events/Calendar 16
October and November have been busy months thanks to our exceptional Fall weather! We have also been busy with some staff changes. Evan Martin, Director of Finance since 2014, left SGCC for an opportunity as Director of Finance at Duncan Golf Management. Evan will be greatly missed. Replacing Evan is Timothy Smith who has over 40 years of experience as a director of finance or chief finance officer in several industries including hospitality, convention/events, and gaming. Mr. Smith has a wealth of knowledge and experience providing solutions to complex finance and operational systems. We are incredibly fortunate to have Mr. Smith join our SGCC team and I have no doubt that he will help SGCC progress to new heights.
Additionally, Conor Cruz, our part-time membership and communications coordinator, has also left SGCC to pursue full-time employment. We are thrilled to have Ally Johnson step into that role. Many of you know Ally due to her Outside Services exceptional customer service. Ally is also attending UNR where she is pursing a dual degree in marketing and finance, which in addition to her wonderful personality, makes her a perfect fit for this position. Please help welcome both Ally and Tim to their new positions.
On November 20th, your Board of Directors had our annual planning retreat. We reviewed the results of the member survey and are in the process of updating the strategic plan to address the hundreds of comments provided. We had 199 respondents and cannot thank our membership enough for taking the time to share your thoughts. Together we will continue to improve our club. The survey results are posted on Clubster under Club Links. CONGRATULATIONS to Jason Buckholz who is the winner of the survey raffle. Jason, your $75 credit book is waiting for you in the Golf Shop.
If you haven’t had an opportunity to sign up for the Club holiday events, please take a quick moment to go to Clubster to RSVP. If you visit Clubster on your desktop or laptop computer (instead of the app), it is much easier to see the calendar of events. Clubster assures us that they are working diligently to release a new version of their app which we will have an opportunity to preview in a few weeks.
Happiest of holidays to you all!

Marketing & Membership Sales
As I step into the marketing and sales position at the club, I want to say that I am so excited to continue gaining experience here. I also want to thank all of you for your gracious support. The amount of people who have reached out to me upon my acceptance in this position has made it so much easier to adjust.
With that said, our winter special is in full effect. This promotion has encouraged several trial members to join now, rather than waiting until the spring. With the winter season upon us, we can expect to see more social members joining. The holiday events are something no one wants to miss out on! Remember, if you refer a new member, you'll receive a gift card for the club!
In October and November, we hosted our first ever New Member Happy Hour. These were a big success due to the sponsors, putting contest, and all members who attended. We will continue to host this event at The Grille each month starting back up on January 9 under the new name of "Member Appreciation Happy Hour." All members are encouraged to attend!
Finally, I want to thank everyone who completed the club survey. Your feedback is extremely important in ensuring that the club is growing in a positive direction. If you have any other suggestions or ideas that would benefit the club and our membership, please feel free to stop by my office. My door is always open!
Thank you again for the warm welcome into this new position, I look forward to continuing my working with you all.
Another Successful Happy Hour
SMGA Finale Dinner
December-February Tee Times:
Congratulations to Somersett's player of the year, Matt Rasmussen! SMGA President Curtis Chan presented him with a dashing plaid jacket. Next year, Matt will carry on the tradition by choosing a new jacket and presenting it to the 2020 Player of the Year.
Thank you Brett Charbonneau of American Family Insurance and Stephanie Hanna of Synergy Home Mortgage for sponsoring this month's Member Happy Hour!
Buck Yaeger wins the putting contest and is given a gift basket from Stephanie and Brett.
October and half of November provided great weather to enjoy some rounds of golf before we bust out the skis and snow boards this winter. With the density of turf on the fairways, we extended the 90 degree rule an extra few weeks and are now Cart Path Only, along with the DR Tee on mats for the winter months. We also cut another cup in the greens to allow for traffic control during the winter when the greens are frozen. Taylor applied the winter fungicide application on the greens to prevent against Snow Mold and the course is ready for dormancy.
Our Poa control on greens has been targeting seed head suppression during the playing season, and we will continue using PGR’s again in the spring. Remember the more bentgrass we can have on our putting surfaces the better off they will be. Here’s to a wet winter and heavy snowpack, so we can have another great season in 2020. Finally, I hope everyone has a safe memorable holiday season!

We look forward to a new golf cart fleet in April, 2020. This allows Members an opportunity to purchase any of current fleet at reduced pricing. Our entire fleet’s batteries were replaced in December 2018 – February 2019. Our Cart Mechanic Pat Blue has identified the best cars in the fleet. 2015 ClubCar Precedents are $2800 while the 2008 Club Car Precedents are $1700. See page 16 for images. If you are looking to make these street legal, I would anticipate spending a few hundred dollars to add rear view mirror, safety restraints, lights and turn indicators. You may reserve yours today – we are happy to store until April.
We are looking forward to our ILT Trip January 8 – 15 to Secrets Puerto Los Cabos. Currently we have 20 couples attending. There are 4 seats on the plane left. Let me know ASAP if you would like to attend OR if you’d just like to stay here in the snow : - )
We will conduct our annual Holiday Sale this Friday, December 6 from 5PM – 8PM. Enjoy wine and light hors d’oeuvres while shopping with your golf shop staff. The sale will go through the weekend during business hours. I hope you can join us.
Reminder – All credit book MUST be spent by December 31. Call the golf shop to check what your balance might be.
Winter is here!
After enjoying a great first half of November snow has finally settled in. We are in hopes of at least a few more good days this year. We will have starting times Tuesday through Thursday starting at 11AM and Friday through Sunday will conduct 11AM shotgun starts through February 2020. Take advantage of the indoor short game arena to keep your game up this Winter. Remember you may book a reservation up to two weeks out (equity members) for up to an hour at a time. The space comfortably accommodates up to 5 people per hour. The UNR Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams will be utilizing it come January.
We closed out a great season of events in October and November.
Our Couple’s Club Champs are Brad Filippone & Trish Tatu and Chuck Harder & Sheryl Eilenfeldt. Brad and Trish shot a combined 18 hole score of 78 gross; comfortably ahead of Dave and Bonnie Hughes who finished second. Chuck and Sheryl tied Scott and Muriel Garrison after both finished on 73 net winning on a count out on the last 6 holes.
Kay O’Brien, Rhodna Brown, Pat Neumann and Cindy Hardy enjoyed a two-shot victory playing a 2 Best Ball of the 4 Shamble Format in the SLGA Finale. Their total of 36 under par bested two teams finishing on 34 under par – Marty Rasmussen, Sheri Gaskill, Debby Dinsdale and Shannon Dressel as well as Ann Andrews, Maggie Heinen, Darilyn Ehlen and Laura Hone.
It was Scott Garrison and Erik Olson finishing on top in the SMGA Finale with a score of 59 in the 6/6/6 format. They were one better than the teams of Neil O’Kane & Curtis Chan and Wayne and Rob Griffin. Curtis Chan scored a Hole in One on #3 in the event.
In our yearly match play events Debby Dinsdale captured her 2nd Cervantes Cup with a 1 up win over Anita Mackey. On the men’s side 2016 Champ Jim Brant knocked out Bob Davies in the Palmer Flight while our Defending Champ Roman Mudd knocked out Nick Galvan in the Nicklaus Flight.
Both the SLGA and SMGA conducted wonderful annual dinners this year celebrating their successful seasons. Chef Marcos and his team prepared delicious dinners for both. We enjoyed recaps of the year and honored both SLGA and SMGA Players of the Year Anita Mackey and Matt Rasmussen. Our Most Improved golfers of the year were Bonnie Hughes, Muriel Garrison and Peter Joyce. Brian Richards was our iron man posting over 126 rounds in 2019.

Want more of Alice's dessert? Come to our Bunch with Santa, Member Holiday Party, or Holiday Dinner. All desserts will be homemade by her!
This Recipe comes from my mother. It is the staple sugar cookie for the holidays in our family, and personally I think its the best. These cookies are softer and much more cake-like than your typical shortbread-style cookie cutter cookie. These make for a great family cookie decorating project too!

We had another great SMGA season in 2019 and I want to thank all of you for participating. For those members who don’t play in SMGA events often, I encourage you to come out and join us next season.
Congratulations to the 2019 event winners:
President, 2019 SMGA Board of Directors
Greetings From the SLGA
As 2019 comes to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity, on behalf of the SLGA Board, to review our SLGA accomplishments for the year and thank those who have contributed to our successful season.
We started the year with 84 members and have added 13 new members. It’s very exciting to know that we will start our 2020 season with 97 members with the hope of adding more over the course of the year.
Our offerings of social and golf events included hosted tournaments (Pink Ball, Margaritaville, President’s Cup, and Fall Finale) as well as other member activities (Chocolate and Champagne Social, Opening Breakfast, Mystery Bus Trip, Fall Finale dinner, and Ornament Exchange). Additionally, we were pleased to see our members participate in club sponsored events (Cervantes Cup, Eclectic competition, Club and Sr Club Championships, Wed Night Nine and Wine). We also saw increased participation in our weekly Wed and Sat SLGA Play Days. Lastly, we were proud that Somersett women’s golf was well represented in High Sierra Team Play (competing with other local golf courses), Northern Nevada Silver Cup, and the Golf Pro-Club President tournament.
As a result of the fundraising that we did through your membership fees, tournament fees, and local business and member sponsoring, I am happy to report that we have raised approximately $10,000 to distribute to local charities. This year’s list of charities include: Domestic Abuse Center, McQueen Girls Golf Team, The Eddy House, and Junior Connection for college scholarships for high school girl’s golf members.
On a sad note, we lost a beloved member of our golf community, Rayleen Cudworth. The SLGA board will be putting a bench on Hole 3 in Rayleen’s memory. We know that Rayleen’s spirit and love of golf will continue to live with us through this gift.
None of these events and activities could have been possible without thanking the SGCC golf staff, the Food and Beverage staff, local business sponsors, member hole sponsors, the members of the 2019 SLGA Board (Ann Andrews, Sheri Harrell, Laurie Murdoch, Kay O’Brien, Terry Raposa, Marty Rasmussen, Pat Neumann, Sheri Bradley, Carole Zarcone, and Maggie Heinen), and the member volunteers who generously donated their time to help with event logistics. THANK YOU ALL!
The 2020 SLGA Board and I look forward to another exciting season as we hope to introduce some new and fun events to broaden participation among SGCC women golfers, regardless of skill level, while continuing to challenge all golfers with an opportunity to develop their games. Look for more information on our 2020 calendar in January.
I wish you and your families a very happy, and healthy holiday season.
