Are you involved with a nonprofit or know someone who is? Let us help you get the word out. Tuesdays at The Terrace is another way The Terrace at French Village is giving back to the community. Every Tuesday we air a spot with J-98 "The Boot" and we would like to use that public platform to highlight worthy charitable organizations in our community. Perhaps your organization is pushing to meet fundraising goals, in need of equipment or supplies, or trying to recruit volunteers. Let The Terrace know about it, and we will put the word out on air during our broadcast time. There is no charge and there are no strings attached. For consideration, email us at frenchvillagewinery@gmail.com with your organization's name, mission, most relevant need or announcement. Please include the contact information you would like us to announce on air. For more information about this program, email us or call 573.358.7177.

May
A close second to October for pure viewing pleasure, the month of May is a magical time for winery visitors in Missouri. Vibrant flowers and other foliage are on full display, yet the often volatile weather of early spring has given way to a more predictable pattern of sunshine, breezes and lush, green landscapes. Perhaps most exciting is the expected completion of the gorgeous new garden designed by Rita Landolt. In the works at press time, the garden will feature native plants, bright annuals and space to walk among the foliage. Our garden will be the ideal spot to memorialize a loved one, recognize a person or business, or simply knock back with a soothing glass of your favorite TFV wine at hand.
A new winery season means changes ... not just in the weather but in how we do business. Visitors to The Terrace at French Village will notice some enhancements we have made to things they may not have noticed before. The most obvious transformation will be to the physical space. With the help and talent of horticulturist Rita Landolt, (pg.6) our already pastoral outdoor space is undergoing plantings that pop. Later this year, we'll enlist the help of some of Missouri's most creative minds for another renewal: the Bride and Groom Room. Interior designers are invited to show us what magic they can work on this enchanting space on a modest budget. Also poppin' is the 2018 menu, which we have retooled to bring patrons more of what they love. Our kitchen is fully equipped to provide fresh, delicious entrées and appetizers. To that end, we have hand-tossed, brick-oven pizzas with straight-from-the-garden produce that pairs wonderfully with our wines. For meat-eaters with hearty appetites, our fat and juicy new burger is prov-ing a huge hit! The hunk of broiled beef, the generous portion of gooey cheese, the tangy tomatoes, the grated-cheese-dusted bun—you won't be able to stop eating. And those fries? Heaven! The season would not be complete without a full lineup of music and special events every weekend to draw in everyone from the casual oenophile to the music-lover to the dedicated gearhead. We highlight a few things to look ahead to in the next pages.
Summers at The Terrace are "hot" in so many ways ... but you can cool down on our scenic terrace with a chilled wine any time. We are hard at work on a couple of new features at the winery that you can read about in this issue. (Shopping, anyone?) But there is so much to see and do on any given weekend. Live music is a given, and we are working on a special Independence Day bash that will make you even prouder to be an American. Events are constantly added to the winery calendar, so check the Events page at TheTerrace.com for updates often, or sign up for our newsletter to get early announcements and specials sent directly to your inbox.

"Bud Break" is the ideal time to hop the wine trail in Missouri wine country, including The Terrace at French Village near the scenic Route du Vin. According to Missouri Wine and Grape Board, the appearance of the leaf buds in the vineyards during the first weeks of spring signals the awakening of the grapevines from the long dormancy of winter ... and is a joyful harbinger of a season of grape-growing.

I'm excited to work with The Terrace to build a colorful new garden this spring. When it's all done, there will be fresh herbs and produce to be used in their kitchen. The Terrace will also use this beautiful space to educate children and adults on how to support and enjoy all of the natural beauty that surrounds us. I can personally attest to the satisfaction to be found in this pursuit. Growing up, I lived next door to my grandparents. Summers were filled with my dad and grandpa working side by side in their gardens and working their bees. My mom and my grandma, in turn, were "working up" the produce and canning it for the winter. All other activities seemed to revolve around Mother Nature and the outdoors also. Still, it wasn’t until my adult life that I realized how much I loved being in a garden raising vegetables and flowers. It is hard work, but I find it calming and fulfilling. To be clear, I have a lot of passion for all things flora and enjoy playing in the garden and landscape, but I do not have a degree in horticulture. I have learned things throughout my childhood in the garden and years or by trial and error. It is a great feeling to raise vegetables for my family, knowing they were raised "cleanly." I have also started focusing on native plants and those that support our pollinators, which in turn support my garden. I have my own bees now! I recently joined forces to bring back the Monarch habitat in our country and am one of the Monarch Way Stations. After several visits to my garden, Garrison Murphey at The Terrace was enthusiastic about planting a pollinator garden at his winery that would support the Monarchs and other butterflies and pollinators. (The Monarchs overwintering numbers are down almost another 15 percent from last year. See Monarchjointventure.org for more information.) The Terrace's garden will give visitors opportunities to experience their habitat and life cycle up close. It will be an educational and restive place within the scenic atmosphere of The Terrace. We see it as a win-win for everyone.

Maggie Carr (nee Schmidt), 27, of Bonne Terre grew up on a 720-acre cattle farm in French Village, the kind of corn-fed Midwestern girl at the geographical and figurative heart of America. It was on the family farm where, from a very young age, she imagined her wedding day playing out. “I had pretty much picked out my gown when I was 5 years old,” she says. “My dad always bought me bridal magazines, so I knew.” But when Maggie and then-boyfriend Chris, now 26, got engaged, an important component of her fantasy wedding was slipping away: The family was leasing the farm to someone else and it was no longer an option for the ceremony. “We knew we wanted it to be outside,” says Maggie. “We’re both outdoorsy people; our first date was fishing.” The young couple spoke to area golf courses and other outdoor venues but met with little enthusiasm until contacting Garrison Murphey, owner of The Terrace at French Village. “The atmosphere was really what we were looking for. When I contacted him about things he was just so accommodating. Garrison was the selling point.” Best off all? The Schmidt farm, just two-tenths of a mile from The Terrace is plainly visible from the winery. The young bride was able to get her hair and makeup done at the farm and make the short jot to The Terrace for the ceremony. Maggie and Chris were married June 28, 2014. “I kind of went with a country-rustic theme, and it really lends itself to that with all the wood around,” she says, gushing over The Terrace's swings, multilevel waterfall, coy pond and her family farm as the backdrop. “It makes for great pictures.” In addition to the scenic view and one-on-one help, the bride and groom had an air-conditioned room in which to cool off, a tent for their guests and the peace of mind that they didn’t have to clean up the venue after a full day. Although the couple held the ceremony at The Terrace and the reception elsewhere, the winery provided everyone a picturesque place to kick back before and after the wedding. “You’re going to have all the nerves as a bride, and the groom is going to have nerves. You’re in the best place to unwind, have a beer and calm down.” To book a wedding at The Terrace at French Village, visit the website or call 573.358.7177.

barn supremacy
The old barn at The Terrace at French Village has been a point of curiosity for patrons who have visited us for the past several years. Original to the circa 1890s Werner family property, the structure is charming in its maturity and ripe for enjoyment by our loyal customers. It screamed out for something that would draw people not only to its innate historic value but to other uses that would add value. So, in keeping with the era in which the barn was erected, and in keeping with the interests of may of our visitors, we are opening The Barn this summer. The Barn will be a shop full of antique fixtures, collectibles, handcrafted decor, adorable knick-knacks and random sundries that find their way to us from who knows where. We'll likely be just as surprised as you by what comes through The Barn doors over the months and years to come! Pictured above and below are just a few of the types of items you will find for sale at The Barn. Plenty of rustic charm to be had. The Barn will be open during the same hours as The Terrace winery, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays until the winery closes for the winter. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for updates on our progress and news about The Barn's opening day. Interested in becoming a vendor? Call or email The Terrace at French Village for information about selling antiques and collectibles at The Barn. For vendor information, call 573.358.7177.

Sweet, white wines are often the backbone of a winery's weekend sales. Add in a light body and some friendly bubbles, and you're onto a surefire hit. These are the strengths of the perennial popular Moscato, or Muscato, wine. Like many sparkling wines, Muscato makes an ideal introduction to inexperienced wine drinkers, mixer for spritzers and companion for other confections. But if you've written off this sweetly sippable tipple as nothing more than a liquid trifle, you're missing its most compelling and complex characteristics. To help you explore this under-appreciated vino, we've provided some pairing suggestions that may surprise you! Cheeses: Monterey jack, Havarti, feta, Brie Nuts: almonds, pistachios and other sweet nuts Veggies: celery, ripe bell peppers, carrots Proteins: poultry, seafood, flaky white fish Main Dishes: spicy pasta, Asian stir-fry, curry Desserts: Have Muscato as your dessert or enjoy with cheesecake, chocolate, bread pudding or custard. The flavors of the wine play nicely with fruit- and nut-heavy desserts like seasonal pies and decadent chocolate hazelnut torte. The Terrace Muscato Grape: 100% Muscat Canelli Alcohol: 11.5% ABV Sugar: 8.0% This delightful sipper has bright, vibrant strawberry notes with a hit of orange blossom and a fresh, crisp finish. Terrace Pairings: buffalo wings, cheese plate, fresh salad
