A NOTE FROM THE CEO
You Have the Power to End 2019 on a High Note I know, you probably hear this every time the holiday season rolls around, but can you believe that another year is coming to a close? It seems that 2019 has gone by in a blink of an eye. As the new year approaches, I always like to take some time to reflect on the past 12 months. Have I followed through on the resolutions I made in January? Have I reached short-term goals and gotten closer to accomplishing some longer-term dreams? If you are feeling that you did not accomplish all that you hoped to financially this year, you are not alone. And while you cannot go back and start 2019 over, Resource One can help you end the year better than you started it and get you on track for years to come. No matter the time of year, we can help you get in the habit of saving. From the Save to Win account to certificates of deposit and IRAs, Resource One offers you several savings options – all of which keep your money safe and allow you to earn dividends on your hard-earned cash. Another way we return the savings to you is through competitive loan rates. If you are not happy with your current auto or mortgage rate, talk to us about a possible refinance. We make it our mission to find solutions, making sure you are not paying a penny more than necessary. Finally, if you plan on spending a little more around the holidays (like most of us do), and you are interested in building credit while getting rewarded, consider using a rewards credit card from Resource One. You will enjoy the typical perks of our card, like no annual or cash advance fee, while also earning cash back on every purchase. Whether you are carrying more debt than desired, you bought a home or car at a higher-than-ideal rate or you are finding yourself running out of money before the month is over, we can help. Our Certified Financial Coaches are trained to guide you in rewriting your financial story, starting from wherever you are right now. Together, we can wrap up 2019 on a positive note. From the entire Resource One Credit Union family, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a joyous and peaceful holiday season and a prosperous new year. We look forward to helping you reach new heights in 2020. Warmest regards, Mary Beth Spuck
SCAM WATCH
See Through a Scam Here are some tips to help you avoid losing money to a scam: 1. Do not provide your information. Do not give money, gift card numbers, your online banking access, or credit card account numbers to anyone who calls you unsolicited. 2. Ask questions and research. Ask specific questions about the company and make sure it checks out. You can even ask for a way to call the company back; typically scammers will not be able to provide you with a call-back number matching the company’s information. Check out the company with local government law enforcement and consumer agencies; ask whether other people have registered complaints about the business. You can also enter the company name into an online search engine to look for complaints. 3. Be wary of unsolicited calls. Despite what the Caller ID might say, legitimate tech companies do not make unsolicited calls to customers. 4. Never give a stranger remote access to your computer. Scammers can steal your personal information and install malware that can be used to commit identity theft. 5. Beware of requests for untraceable payments. Scammers often ask for payment by wire transfer, gift card, or pre-paid debit cards. Legitimate companies do not—or will not—accept payments in these forms. 6. If you need support, go to a company you know and trust. Get advice from friends or family for a referral. If you must look online, do a search on the company’s name with the terms “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” 7. Never call a number given in a pop-up window that warns of computer problems. If you get a suspicious pop-up, do not click on anything and restart your computer. If the issue persists, find a reputable company to help. 8. Never open attachments or email links from unknown senders. These can generate the fake pop-up warnings that prompt you to call scammers.
What Should You Do If a Scam Happens to You? If you believe you are a victim of fraud, below are actions you need to take to protect yourself. 1. Contact your financial institution. If you have provided your credit union account information or online banking login credentials, immediately contact us and we can help. We will assist you with setting up new account information, blocking compromised information, and resetting passwords. 2. Report it. You should report all scams and fraud attacks to the Federal Trade Commission by visiting ftc.gov/complaint or the Better Business Bureau at bbb.org/scamtracker. Be sure to include as many details as possible about the scam. You should also file a report with your local law enforcement department. 3. Need support? Go to someone you trust. If you need help fixing a problem with your computer, go to someone you know. Many reputable software companies offer support online or by phone. Stores that sell computer equipment also offer technical support in person.
SCAM WATCH: Tech Support Scams In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) received nearly 143,000 reports of tech support scams. Typically these types of scams involve a phony representative helping you “fix” a fake computer problem for a fee. Recently the FTC reported several new approaches to the tech support scams. How it works The Refund. A big tech company appears to call you, such as Microsoft, Apple, or Dell. The person on the phone claims you were erroneously charged for a tech support product and so the company owes you a refund. To get that refund, all you need to do is give them some information. The person on the phone says you need to give them your banking or credit card information. They might ask you to log in to your online banking or give them remote access to your computer. You may even be asked to pay using a pre-paid debit card and give them the numbers. The Pop-up. You are on the internet and you get a pop-up message on your screen. It appears to be from a well-known tech company, and it says there is a problem and you must call. When you talk to someone, you are told your IP address is being used for fraud or even for child pornography websites—and that you could be held liable. Scammers may also call you out of the blue too, with the same claim. Either way, you are told the person on the phone can help if you pay and give them remote access to your computer. The Fake. Your computer is behaving badly, or you need to recover a lost password and need expert help. You go online to find someone. You locate what looks to be a reputable company and fill out an online form to give them your contact information. When the company calls you, they ask for access to your computer to supposedly check for problems. Once there, they show you “evidence” of viruses or other threats that they say need to be addressed immediately. To fix the issues, the scammers insist you need to purchase expensive software from them that you do not, in reality, need. Regardless of the specifics of the scam, you are out money—and worse, if you gave them remote access to your computer, they likely stole personal and account information.

WHEN IT COMES TO PERSONALIZED SERVICE, RESOURCE ONE 'WALKS THE WALK'
Technology is what seems to drive banking these days, but when leaders of Trinity Baptist Church in Grand Prairie, Texas, were seeking out a new bank for their business services, Pastor Steven Giordano said he was looking for personalized service – something his previous bank didn’t seem to understand. After feeling like just another account, Pastor Giordano says he refused to believe all banks treated their members in such a way. He heard about Resource One Credit Union at a fall festival, and says he stumbled upon exactly what the church was looking for. “While Resource One is ‘with the times’ in regard to technology, I personally like that I can sit down face-to-face with a representative who can provide the assurance I need to have peace of mind that our money is safe, secure and working for us like it should be,” Pastor Giordano says. He was sold. Trinity Baptist Church became a Resource One commercial lending member in early 2018, originating a loan to refinance existing debt with a bank and provide cash-out equity to remodel the church. Since then, he has not looked back. “When we decided to use Resource One Credit Union for the remodel loan, they took the time to see what loan, what terms and what amount made sense for us,” he says. “… Honesty, integrity, character, caring, and concern is their DNA if you will, and we appreciate that it is!” He is proud to work with a credit union that upholds the same values his church does. At the end of the day, though, he still has an organization to run. As a 63-year-old church, the pastor says they have a substantial budget that must be tracked down to the penny. In that regard, Resource One has also been a valuable resource. “Each week, the information we need when we reconcile is readily available, concise, and laid out in a manner that we can sync it with our accounting software,” he says. “This dependability and repeatability give us peace of mind.” When it comes down to it, Resource One truly backed up what they said they could do. And that has made all the difference for Pastor Giordano and his team. “Resource One Credit Union not only talked the talk when it came to great customer service and personal care,” he says, “they walked the walk as well!” If you are interested in utilizing commercial banking products that come with personalized service, contact Resource One today!
