Why Go Digital?
January/February 2020
JJML is celebrating our 110th year by going green! Starting with this edition, we are no longer mailing a printed library newsletter.* Instead, a digital newsletter will be sent to our email list and made available on our website. Now, if you want to register for a library program, all you have to do is click on its title to visit the registration page. It's that easy! To get the digital newsletter sent to your inbox, you must sign up to receive JJML emails. If you currently don't get emails from JJML, you can sign up today at http://bit.ly/jjmlnews or by visiting the library. *Print editions of this and future newsletters will be available at the library for those who prefer paper.

We're Adult...ish: Programs for 20s & 30s
john jermain memorial
evolution
In her original “Deed of Trust” for John Jermain, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage instructed library staff to “provide for such lectures, exhibitions, instruction or amusement in connection with said institution as they may deem from time to time desirable,” and in 1910, when the library first opened, director Olive Pratt Young did just that with English classes for Sag Harbor’s factory workers, weekly Victrola concerts, and community meetings. In 1918, commemorating Mrs. Sage, Young wrote, “The Library is a living pulsing monument to [her] memory…and it is the duty of each and every one of us to see that it remains as such, and never becomes just the old time storage house of books.” Still, over the last 100 years or so, our librarians have acquired a lot of print material, intentionally building a vibrant and varied collection of classic titles, reference works, contemporary fiction for all ages, and the occasional quirky gem that makes the shelves sing. Our on-site collection is enhanced and emboldened through access to the Suffolk Cooperative Library System’s shared resources and daily deliveries of inter-library loans. I have never once mistaken all those linear feet of pages in the stacks for an “old time storage house of books.” The ideas and stories in our collection are the record of our past, and our best chance at creating a sustainable future. That said, in my years as director, our programming and outreach activities have also grown, as has the newsletter publicizing them: from a 4-page mailing (with a really big font size to fill a lot of empty space) in November/December 2007, to the tightly-packed 12-page version we mailed you in November/December 2019. Even at that length, we had a hard time fitting in descriptions of our art shows, seed library, language and citizenship classes, book clubs, story times, lectures, writing workshops and creative living events– not to mention news about the library. 2020 brings us new opportunities, and new program ideas, including a story time inspired by both Mr. Rogers (love him!) and the rich diversity of our Sag Harbor Neighbors—in fact, that’s what we’ve titled this new monthly series for children and their parents, which celebrates our neighbors, their careers, and the books they love. Future events will include a farmer, a basketball player, and an artist; but we begin in January with Reverend Kimberly Quinn Johnson from the Unitarian Universalist Church, and in February with Pierson-graduate Robert Kohnken (aka Drag Queen Diva Naomi). Registration information can be found on page 10 of this newsletter. 2020 also brings changes to the newsletter itself: if you have read this far, you will see that it has been joyously re-imagined in a full-color 20-page format. The online version of each edition can now be accessed on our website a week or so before program registration begins, and the text can be adjusted to any size you want by zooming in with your device. Print copies, should you prefer that format, are available in the library. And if you want the newsletter delivered directly to your inbox, just let us know and we will add your email to our mailing list. I hope to see you at a program—or in the stacks—in the weeks ahead. And when you are here, stop by my office if you would like to see Mrs. Sage’s original Deed of Trust. It is just one of our many treasures—albeit, perhaps, the most important. Library Director

February is Love Your Library month! In case you're stuck, below you'll find some creative ways to show your favorite library some love. Of course, the best way to show your support of all things libraries is simply to use them! Come to our classes, check out some books, participate in the Winter Reading Club, and anything else that interests you. Here are some other great ways you can show some library love: 1. Be a library advocate: Tell people how much you love the library, and why! The best marketing plan in the world can't compete with word-of-mouth recommendations. Advocate for libraries at a state and local level too, and help your friends and family see the value in their libraries. 2. Become a Friend of the Library: Did you know our library has a Friends group? This lively and engaged group of library supporters run activities and fundraisers that support our community programs. The Friends meet monthly on the second Thursday of the month– meetings will start up again in March. Stop by and see what it's all about! 3. Bring a friend to the library: Bring someone you know to the library who's never been here before. Whether they like to read, cook, paint... there's a book or class we know they'll love! And you can help get them in the door. It'll be love at first sight! 4. Get artsy: All throughout February we'll have a table of art supplies available for you to get creative, and tell us what the library means to you. Next time you stop by JJML, draw or write a little something about why you love us, and we’ll share it in a public display. 5. Tell us your story: JJML's Local History & Special Collections isn't just about preserving the past– it's about preserving the present, too! We're always looking for people to record oral histories about their life in Sag Harbor, such as veterans, or those present during historic village events. Email historyroom@johnjermain.org for more information. It's a quick and painless process, we promise! 6. Donate: All donations, big and small, make a difference! A $10 donation can help purchase a new graphic novel, while a $10,000 donation could help fund a year-long program series, or a maker space. Previous donors have funded programs such as bilingual tutoring, the Teen Writing Group, citizenship, language learning classes, and more. 7. Love your library, love your community: Finally, we want to take all your love for libraries and pay it forward to the community. During the month of February we will be collecting nonperishable canned goods for the Sag Harbor Food Pantry. If you love the library, please bring something on your next visit, and we'll pass that love on to others!

1000 Books before kindergarten Giving your child a life-long love of reading begins earlier than you'd think. Most children don't start school until the age of 5– their first educators are you, their caregivers! The concept is simple, and the rewards are priceless. Read a book, any book, to your newborn, infant, or toddler. The goal is to read 1000 books before your child starts kindergarten. And yes, you can repeat books– the 100 times you've read Pete the Cat all count! Enroll in the program at the Children’s desk and pick up a reading log to help you and your child keep track of the books you read. Simply color in the icon for each book you read, including those repeat reads! Bring in your logs and check in with the Children’s Librarian whenever its convenient for you. We will track your child’s reading for every 100 books read. Happy reading!
