The pasta-based meals help to feed the many homeless and needy folks in our city. The Center is located about a mile from the Cathedral on Maryland Avenue and feeds up to 500 men, women and children each day. Our next Loaves & Fishes gathering will be held Saturday Jan. 18 in the Cathedral kitchen in the Fr. Monios Hall. Please consider coming out and helping! We meet at 9:30 a.m. and are usually finished by 11 a.m. Bring at least two pounds of cooked pasta like ziti or rigatoni for the base of the casseroles. For information, contact Melody Simmons at firstname.lastname@example.org or Sue Prevas at email@example.com.

Weekend Backpacks for Homeless Kids would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the Annunciation community for its continued support. With your help, we were able to provide 122,473 meals to homeless students in Baltimore City last year.
The mission of WBHK is to provide nourishment to vulnerable youth in Baltimore City in order to foster their academic success. Hungry children incur delays in their physical, intellectual and emotional development. There are more than 3,000 homeless children in Baltimore City Schools. The largest number are in kindergarten and first grade. Baltimore City has no state or federally funded weekend feeding programs for school children.
Here is how you can help:
Make a donation of $10 to WB4K (check payable to) and place in Philoptochos mailbox, or you may donate online at www.weekendbackpacks.org.
Help pack backpacks on Thursdays from 9:30-11:00am at their headquarters 1505 Bedford Avenue, Pikesville.
Volunteer to deliver the backpacks to schools. Contact Steve at firstname.lastname@example.org or 410-615-3340.
In addition, we are continuing to collect the following: cereal - 11oz or larger; peanut butter - 15 or 16 oz jars (no jelly); ramen noodles; granola bars; cans of Chef Boyardee; canned fruits, vegetables, beans, fish, chicken and sausages; small individual containers of applesauce or pudding. Place donations in the collection box outside of the Church office. For questions or more information, please contact Effie Theodore at 410-616-9847 or email@example.com.

Thanks to all for a great start to this year. We love our Sunday School families and welcome all to participate—it’s never too late! A large part of Sunday School is teaching what it means to live a Christian life. We love Santa and always have so much fun at our Communion breakfast. However these benefits multiply when our children get involved in volunteering no matter what the capacity. Specifically, it helps them in the following ways:
· They're able to draw closer to God: When our children help people, it draws them closer to Him, His teachings, and the way of life that He practiced and advocated.
· They'll know they are making a difference in other people’s lives: By volunteering, the kids give people their time, a valuable asset that never comes back once spent, so it is key they spend it wisely to make a positive difference.
· They are building a good foundation for the future: When kids volunteer on a regular basis, they grow up understanding the value and importance of helping those who are not as blessed and in turn become adults who practice Christian values and enrich the lives of those they live and interact with. This is the essence of paying it forward.
So far this year, the Sunday School children have collected backpacks full of food for homeless children, collected supplies, and made cards for the homeless, and collected warm clothing (coats, hats, gloves)/personal care items for children. They made cards for the shut-ins and participated in the Advent Giving Tree. Thank you for supporting them and the greater community in the spirit-building efforts that will last a lifetime.
A Message from our Sunday School
by Jean Prevas
The Philoptochos has been extremely busy in the last few months of 2019. Every month our Loaves and Fishes program provides approximately 600 meals to the Franciscan Center.
This October we partnered with Baltimore Station to support homeless vets on their annual Chili Cook off. Our team was headed by Father Duane and Father Dean. Our partnership with this organization helped them raise 90 thousand dollars towards their mission to help homeless vets get back on their feet.
Our Philoptochos has worked with the Weekend Backpack for Kids program for the last few years. There are approximately 3,000 homeless people in Baltimore every night and a large number of them are children. The largest number of children are kindergarten and 1st graders. We have provided countless can goods to fill a backpack for a family of 4 over the weekend. This program gives 500 backpacks a week to families in 22 Baltimore city schools. We have donated hats, scarfs and gloves for the fall and winter months as well. This is an ongoing project.
In November we partnered with the Sunday School children to give gifts to the Franciscan Center families for Christmas.
We continue to financially support several families from our parish and the surrounding community who have found themselves in a medical or financial hardship.
We are constantly raising money to support this mission. We have just finished the Christmas Bake Sale and we also have a project where we pack boxes for a packing company and we are paid for this work. Our spring baking project and the annual yard sale are a few of the ways in which we raise money to continue our mission. We work tirelessly to provide for those in need and we have a good time doing it. Please consider joining us and supporting our mission. We would love to have more enthusiastic and energetic people share the joy of giving back to our community and our neighbors.

Saturday of Souls
On February 22, February 29, and March 7, the Orthodox Church has set aside days to offer prayers for the souls of our reposed loved ones. Services will be held at the Cemetery Chapel of the Resurrection (5917 Windsor Mill Road; Gwynn Oak) with Orthros at 9:00 AM, and the Divine Liturgy at 9:45 AM. You may list the first names of your loved ones to be remembered. May God rest their souls and may their memory be eternal!
