Interclub 2021 saw the tournament fished for the first time on a completely new format - "All ports". Our boat Tantrum took full advantage of this heading over to Lord Howe Island for the weekend which I can say is easier said than done. Tantrum traveled over 760 nautical miles to complete our simple goal, to tag as many sharks as we could. Makira & Mia fished extremely hard on 10kg line. This was always going to be a controversial decision that we made, but this was never going to be a fair tournament. I know I don't need to explain to any Sydney members how a tournament should be run to make it fair. In defense of NSWGFA, this was a way of running the interclub tournament with the scare of Covid still around. As everyone is aware, there are far too many variables for this tournament to be run as "All Ports" without many changes, moving forward to next year I do hope that the Interclub as we all know it, will return to it's former glory. The sail past, 3 days fishing plus the Lindy Grieves Ladies Day, Presentation night who didn't miss the frantic running into the weigh station to get your paperwork in on time, then the race against time to get to the Presentation! I would like to hear from everyone about their thoughts on the running of this years interclub ,since now that the can of worms has been opened up, who knows what next years format will be. On a social media note please be aware that NSWGFA does have a media policy in place. Keep aside the dates for this years Peter Goadby Tournament 18th & 19th April. This year we are introducing a cash bonus for the boat tagging 5 Marlin or the highest marlin points over 5 marlin will take home CASH bonus of $10,000. You will need to pay an extra $250 on the entry form to be in the running. Tournament entries will be up very soon.

10 days before the comp we took delivery of the family’s new pride and joy; a 2005 one-owner Riv 47 open. We had a frenzied pack and smash, transferring gear from Soave, our 31CC Bahama (for sale BTW) and provisioning as well as some driving practice and getting to know the vessel. It was a very steep learning curve going from essentially a pimped-up speedboat to a serious flybridge. Clearly, we were not in Kansas anymore, Toto! We had a nice S’E wind and swell push us up the coast on Wednesday in the rain. Coffee and a toasted sandwich in the flybridge was a very welcome change to hull slamming and being soaking wet from departure to arrival. Marking good bait and seeing bird action saw us do quite a few laps of the Canyons but we couldn’t raise a fish. We caught a few dollies there and at the Port Stephens FAD on the way in. We had a feed in the kill-tank and blood on the deck, so we called that a win. Thursday’s forecast said it was going to be rubbish so we had a lay day and prepped our gear. Friday was a glamour day and after getting some bait we headed towards The Carpark. Conditions were perfect however, unlike 2020 (our first comp) we hardly marked any bait outside and the massive columns I thought just stacked like magic after Interclub 2020 were not to be found. We trolled skirts and enjoyed fishing in luxury when around 11am our short rigger started screaming and we had a real one. This was no dollie. After a 25 minute fight, we got a tag in (a serious shortcoming of our team last year, despite holding leader on several occasions!) Sadly, in his last run, he charged the boat and we could not drive away in time and he hit a prop. We tried to swim him but alas, he was too far gone and bleeding badly. Not to be wasted, we had some Marlin sashimi that eve (way better than we imagined) and we now have about 80kgs in the freezer for the smoker. Less than an hour later our long rigger screamed again and it was action all round. This was a great fish that put on the best show I have seen in my 3 years of game fishing. The first fight to tag was approx the same at around 25 mins, but we had a lot more forward runs with the fish jumping like a dolphin alongside the boat for 100m runs at a time. After the tag he wasn’t very tired and somehow got his head down and took off for another 35 min jumping show.
Allora: Interclub Report 2021
We wanted our lure back so it was game on. Still not being seasoned drivers, and certainly not in a flybridge, my suggestion to crank a bit more drag and drive a bit more aggressively worked to get him to the back of the boat. However, our de-hooker was short (our CC one), the drag was up at almost full sunset and he had one more kick and busted us off. The rest of the day saw 2:2:0 and a few more dollies for the fridge. To have 2 of my 4 sons both get their first Marlin’s within an hour of each other and working as a team was a very special moment. I reckon in 2 more years we will be able to even do it without yelling and swearing at each other! We finished our first flybridge practice on 4:4:2. The tournament component of this report will be brief: Saturday- 5:4:0 Sunday- 3:2:0 As they say, “nuff said”. We did learn later from Groundswell’s (professional) decky that when baby blacks or stripes are playing with your skirts, wind them in and feed out a live or dead slimey for a better hook-up rate. Our tag-less fights saw great action on many occasions, only to be windscreen-wiped or to see hooks spat. One even stole one of our favourite skirts, stripping it off the head and hooks. Very frustrating but lesson learned. Interestingly, nearly every strike for us was within a one nautical mile radius of our 2 fish on Friday. I wasn’t going to talk about running our port engine dry on Sunday because we didn’t allow enough time to transfer our fuel from the long-range forward tank, other than to say the sunset and red moon rise were amazing and Leanne and Marine Rescue were fantastic. In true Fisho spirit Fordo, skippering Groundswell, also talked us through the cheat way to bleed and prime your fuel lines into an empty water bottle. So of course by the time Marine Rescue arrived, we had her going again. I wish I had a video going to capture 2 of my team member’s faces when we were asked “how much anchor chain do you have and we replied- not 60 fthms” Next line was “conditions look ok, you may have to drift overnight and we will get you in the morning”. Rampage also broke 2 ropes trying to give us a tow. We got back in about 9pm (followed in by Marine Rescue- just in case). Monday saw us head home on Groundswell and at the Canyons we hooked a solid blue and Jamie had a good fight on. The first run peeled at least 500m and in the first hour, we were in double-digit 200m plus runs. At about 1 hr 10 mins Jamie conceded defeat and passed the rod to Tom Lo who finished the fight. Our big problem was the fish was tail-wrapped and sadly, drowned. It also had a big off-set longliner hook in it, no bill and some big chunks taken out- by sharks presumably. This fish was a real warrior hence the early fight and it was sad to see it end the way it did.

This fish was a real warrior hence the early fight and it was sad to see it end the way it did. All in all, it was another incredible comp. We are learning more and more every year; predominantly from the friendship of the community. From bridling lesson’s from Ron, Ivan’s decky, who came back to our marina after our “team tactics dinner” to show my sons how to do it, to DIY “at-sea” engine repairs, post-dinner acoustic guitar concerts on the aft decks and everything in between, I am starting to form the broader view that competition points are merely the icing on an already bloody great cake. Also pretty proud that through listening to tips, learning from mistakes and having a crack, my sons and a few equally crazy mate’s are catching a few fish all on our own and at the same time, far more importantly, creating life-long memories we will never forget. So 4:4:2 on Friday and 1:1:1 on the run home, as per my report heading, don’t waste all your good shots on your practice swings! Until next year, David
For English Language Lovers. What is the difference between ‘Completed’ and ‘Finished? No dictionary has been able to define the difference between ‘Complete’ and “Finished! But in a linguistic conference in England, Sun Sherman an Indian American, was the clever winner. His response: When you marry the right woman, you are ‘Complete! If you marry the wrong woman, you are ‘Finished.’ And when the right woman catches you with the wrong woman, you are ‘Completely Finished.’ His answer received a five minute standing ovation.
Tattoo A guy gets home late one night and his wife says, “Where the hell have you been?” “I was out getting a tattoo.” “A tattoo? What kind of tattoo did you get?” “I got a hundred-dollar bill on my penis.” “What the hell were you thinking? Why did you get a hundred-dollar bill on your penis?” “Well, number one, I like to watch my money grow, Number two, once in a while, I like to play with my money. And lastly, instead of you going out shopping, you can stay home and blow a hundred bucks.””
A soldier ran up to a nun. Out of breath he asked, “Please, may I hide under your skirt. I’ll explain later.” The nun agreed. A moment later two Military Police ran up and asked, “Sister, have you seen a soldier?” The nun replied, “He went that way.” After the Military Police ran off, the soldier crawled out from under her skirt and said, ‘I can’t thank you enough Sister. You see, I don’t want to go to war to Iraq. The nun said, “I understand completely.“ The soldier added, “I hope I’m not rude, but you have a great pair of legs!” The nun replied, “ If you had looked a little higher, you would have seen a great pair of balls....I don’t want to go to Iraq either!

The Boss’ Wife Carlos calls his boss in the morning, “Ey, boss I can’t come to work today. I got a headache, a stomachache, and my legs hurt, too. I’m a friggin’ mess!” The boss says, “You know Carlos, I really need you here today. When I feel like you do, I go to my wife and tell her to give me a blowjob. That makes me feel better and I can go to work. You should try that.” Two hours later Carlos calls, “Boss, I did what you said and I feel great; I’ll be at work soon. And by the way, you got a real nice house!”
Focus on..."Obsession"
Another beautiful boat that is part of SGFC's members fleet is this wonderful 40ft Blackwatch named "Obsession". Obsession and it's owner Mark Holmes are often regular contributors at many of the SGFC tournaments as well as social events such as the "Kids Fishing Day/Gone Fishing Day" and the Randwick Children's Hospital event where he donates his time and resources to help kids going through a tough time. Obsession was also the winner of the 2020 SGFC Tuna Slam with the skipper himself coming down from the top chair to land a 55.1kg YFT with his son Andrew at the wheel. Not to be outdone, Mark's daughter Rebecca Holmes still holds a junior club record for a 124.6kg Whale Shark on 15kg from 2012.

Well thats a wrap for 2021 Garmin-d'Albora Port Stephens Classic. 96 boats entered to fish for 3 prizes of $18k and 2 junior awards, 145 marlin were tagged, 1 marlin weighed and 3 sharks weighed for the entire weekend, great effort. Below post is a more detailed report. Congratulations to all winners and also thanks to all the boats that supported our event this year, as we all know the current world is a little different and we all have to make adjustments, I can say that the club will be working on 2022 tournament, to continue the standard you all have become to expect when fishing NPSGFC's tournament and we will be making some huge announcements later on in the year so stay tuned. Thank you to our sponsors Garmin, d'Albora marina, BJC covers, Ripcharts, Hancock Speedway and mobile marine electrics, our tournaments would not be around without sponsors like these, so support them when you can. The club would like to thank all it Volunteers on the weigh station, and our ladies in the radio van keeping everyone safe right up until the last boat is safely in the harbour.
