Hey ACPA! I hope that you all are doing well! I’m honored to serve as the 2020 President of ACPA. I am excited to announce that we are getting the ACPA newsletter going again under the leadership of Dr. Crystal Simmons; I want to thank her for her willingness to serve. ACPA has an energetic board, and we have wonderful things in the works for 2020; I do hope that you will be a part of ACPA in the future. Our ECP Chair, Dr. Holly Hoffman, has organized our first Shrink Drinks of the year for Friday, February 28th from 6pm to 9pm at Kon-Tiki in Downtown Oakland; be on the lookout for various other Shrink Drink, and ECP-related events throughout the year. Dr. Jamie Goldstein has graciously agreed to serve as our first-ever CE Chair, and she’ll be coordinating a series of CEs this year on important topics for psychologists, which will possibly include a workshop about how to set up a private practice and an ethics seminar. Our Local Advocacy Network Chair, Dr. Esmeralda Zamudio, will be leading the ACPA delegation to the CPA Lobby Day on March 16th. And our Student Representative, Jevon Rice, is organizing a student mentoring program. In addition, our President-Elect, Dr. Alice LoCicero, has led the ACPA Board in a process to endorse an audit of the Alameda County Sheriff’s office. And I hope to see many of you at the CPA Convention in Newport Beach April 23rd through 26th. And be on the lookout for information about our annual Summer BBQ in June. So yes, ACPA has many exciting things in the work. I want to reiterate that we are here for you, and that you can get in contact with any board member (or with me at eric@ignitechangetherapy.com) at any time. Finally, please encourage your colleagues and friends who are psychologists in Alameda County to join ACPA. Unfortunately, our membership numbers have declined over the last few years, and I would love to reverse that trend moving forward. Thank you!

Call to audit the alameda county sheriff's office
As the ACPA's philosophy is to care for people through responsible psychology, our President and President-Elect issued the statement found below in support of auditing the Alameda County Sheriff's Department: The Alameda County Psychological Association is a volunteer organization of psychologists who live and/or work in Alameda County that is dedicated to serving the public and advancing the profession of psychology. We are a local chapter of the California Psychological Association, which is an affiliate of the American Psychological Association. As mental health professionals, we have learned to recognize and support social conditions that promote the healthy development of families and community members. Likewise, we are aware of the kinds of social conditions that inhibit such development. We strive to use our knowledge and skills to maximize healthy conditions for all families in the county. We contribute to the well-being of members of the community by being competent professionals working in private and public settings, by providing low fee and pro bono services, by engaging in volunteer professional and civic work in the community, by participating in civic discourse and civic actions, by being good neighbors, and by being aware of issues of concern to our neighbors and friends in the county. We have been made aware that there is a great deal of concern among citizens of Alameda County over the state of the county jail, and about the uses of funding for the services provided by the sheriff’s office, which includes oversight of the jail. We are troubled by high death rate among inmates, multiple complaints about the level (or lack) of humane treatment of incarcerated individuals, and the increases in the jail’s budget, with a lack of public understanding of the ways that the increased expenses have improved the jail situation, especially in light of declining rates of incarceration. We have found it puzzling that, in light of these concerns, and in light of multiple requests to the county supervisors supported by multiple organizations, including an organization of our colleagues—Psychologists for Social Responsibility—that the office has not yet been audited. Therefore, we add our organization to the list of multiple organizations, officials, and city councils that are currently sponsoring a call for an audit of that office.

Some of their specialty programs and projects include: Janet Hurwich Leadership Award Adam Moss, Psy.D. Dr. Adam Moss was chosen for the JH Leadership Award this year. Adam completed his post-doctoral fellowship at UCSF Child Trauma Research Center where he worked under the supervision of a number of master clinicians including Alicia Lieberman and Miriam Hernandez Dimmler. He is also a contract psychologist at West Coast Children’s Center providing therapeutic services to young adults in the Youth Advocate Program and a group mentor and facilitator at Stepping Stones. Additionally, Adam co-founded the innovative Surf Circle,a surf youth development program for adolescent boys facilitated by four licensed psychologists. We provide a support system for middle and high school aged boys grounded in surf lessons and facilitated discussion. Student Dissertation Award Jhanev Allen Dissertation Title: Assessing Educators’ Awareness of Racial Microaggressions and Their Knowledge of How to Intervene Using a two-part research design, Jhanev and a team of researchers came to a consensus regarding rating the presence and type of microaggressions in a set of short video clips. In part 2 of the research, Jhanev embedded the videos in a national online survey which assessed public high school teachers to judge whether there is anything inappropriate in each video. If so , how would they label what was wrong, and what they would do if the interaction happened in their classroom. Her research asked the following questions; 1. Can high school educations identify racial microaggressions in realistic video clips of typical interactions? 2. Do teachers who report higher multi-cultural awareness identify racial microaggressions more accurately? 3. Will educators of color have different intervention techniques in responding to microaggressions when compared with their white counterparts? Jhanev hopes to use this research to help educators combat microaggressions in the school setting.
