Welcome to the October edition of Messenger
A message from Headmaster Mark Wallace
Dear Parents and Guardians I hope you have enjoyed the half term break and have been able to relax and enjoy some quality time with your sons and daughters. It may seem odd to send the latest edition of Messenger during the half term break, but we thought it would be good to share with you a number of the activities that took place towards the end of half term due to the last two weeks, in particular, being very busy indeed. This includes the Year 7 concert, the Rewards Trip to Alton Towers and our Halloween Themed final day of half term. As well, we are sharing with you stories of what some of our pupils have been up to over half term, including the Art and History Trip to Paris, and providing details of upcoming events for your diaries. I very much look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday for another busy half term. With best wishes Mark Wallace
Prep pupils step inside the world and mind of Van Gogh
Children at the Prep School have been enjoying a fascinating themed week celebrating the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. They have been learning about his life, his development as an artist and his ultimate failure to gain public recognition. This has allowed us to to consider issues about the importance of mental wellbeing as well as highlighting our core values such as tolerance, love and mutual respect. Most importantly though, they have been recognising the sheer joy that can be found in the beauty of his work. All of the Prep school children have visited the Van Gogh Immersive Experience in York and have been involved in art workshops exploring his techniques and unique use of colour. Mr Burton Deputy Head of Preparatory

Cake and Fundraising
Last week of September saw the Preparatory School’s first fundraising event of the year. Parents, relatives and friends flocked to the coffee morning fundraiser in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and St Barnabas Hospice. There were an amazing array of cakes and other tasty treats as well as competitions and prizes to be won. The children all enjoyed a sale of delicious cakes at break time, including Oma Schimmel’s fantastic Lemon shortbread (a rival even to the Darwin Rocky Road!). The day was a great success, raising an amazing £915.76. Mr Burton Deputy Head of Preparatory

Musical Talent in Year 7
LMS Music
To celebrate all the hard work and commitment demonstrated by our Senior School musicians, we are holding our annual Music Celebration Workshop and Dinner on Wednesday 5 February 2020. This time we have invited Carl Smith the founder and performer of STOMP; one of the most successful shows ever come out of the UK. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with a 'creative and accomplished professional performer of international calibre and experience'. Further details about this exciting event will be available very soon!! Please save the date in your diaries! A wonderful afternoon of music was enjoyed on 17th October when Year 7 joined together to exhibit their musical talents. Families and friends of the pupils were invited into the Recital Hall to experience a fully inclusive show of groups and soloists singing and performing on violins, piano and xylophones! Well done Year 7! Mrs Hutchinson Director of Music

Thinking ahead to the future..
Choosing your GCSE options is never easy and the subjects you choose to study at this stage may help you explore your next career steps. To help you with the decision making process, the Careers Department, along with the subject Heads of Department, have drawn together information to create the Year 9 Careers Guide. The booklet will help you appreciate the benefits of studying different subjects and the possible careers they could lead to. Some of you may have a very definite career route that you would like to follow. This might involve one day applying for University or alternatives, but it is important to understand which qualifications are required to achieve your career goal. However, the vast majority of Year 9 pupils may not have a definite career in mind - this is normal so don’t panic! Therefore, my advice is to read this guide carefully and choose subjects that you genuinely enjoy and want to learn more about. If you or your parents have any questions, please talk to your tutors or teachers and use the red book in Computer Resources to make an appointment with me. Widescreen TV in Resources Study Room Thanks to the generous support of FoLMS, students using the Resources Study Centre now benefit from a new wide screen TV facility which has transformed the room in to a far more practical learning space. Repositioned and larger than before, the new screen affords all students the opportunity to see and learn from the content being shown on screen. Teachers have commented upon how the functionality of the Resources Room has improved and how the new screen is fit for purpose to further enhance Teaching & Learning at Lincoln Minster School. Mr Eastham Deputy Head FoLMS Quiz Many thanks to those who supported the FoLMS Quiz. A good night was had by all, with some pretty difficult rounds of questions to be honest! £900 was raised which is a very good total for the evening! Amazing fundraising efforts Over the past year FoLMS has raised around £20,000 in total! They have funded a number of projects across the three sites including Play equipment and Storage at Prep, an Overhead projector at Prep for the Main Hall, Road safety armbands for Prep and Pre-Prep pupils and an Easter egg hunt activity for Prep and Pre-Prep. At the Senior site FoLMS have purchased Basketball hoops for the playground and an Interactive TV screen for use in the Resources Room. We really do appreciate all the Committee is doing in raising funds to support the school, and your help in making this possible. Mr Wallace Headmaster

Music for Malawi
Tickets are on sale for Music For Malawi on Friday November 8th. This promises to be a really special evening, with music from the Cherry Stone Duo (Will Crawford, guitar and Emily Hopper, harp) and Chris Roberts, solo guitar. The event takes place in the Drama Studio and runs from 7.00 - 9.00 p.m. Tickets are £14.00 / £12.00 concessions, available now on Wisepay, with proceeds going to Chimbota Secondary School in Malawi. Pupils of Drama and Music, together with those who participate in co-curricular Music, can buy tickets at half-price. Founded in 2012, Chimbota Secondary School was started by Kevin Troughton, a Drama teacher from Nottinghamshire, who designed and opened the school in response to the need for an affordable education for local children. Chimbota has gone from strength to strength, but runs entirely on donations. These go not only towards helping pay for school and university fees - £25.00 a term is out of reach for most children - but also towards books, materials, school trips and village projects such as the building of a Maize mill. We are hoping that, in addition to fund-raising, there will be future parallel projects between Chimbota School and LMS. Do come and join us on the 8th to support this exciting new initiative! We are very grateful to ex-pupil James Read for the poster design. Mrs Wafer and Mrs Hutchinson

To celebrate Jenson's birthday this year he decided to invite all of Year 2 to join him in the 'Pretty Muddy' kids obstacle course at the Lincolnshire Showground. His main aim was to have fun but with the added incentive of helping support Cancer Research UK, a cause very close to his family's heart. Jenson proudly named his team the 'Super Lions' and they have raised a whopping £1,222.19. Their motto was 'take turns, help each other and have fun!' WELL DONE Super Lions - we are all very proud of you! Mrs Pink LMS Parent
Pre-Preparatory pupils' amazing scarecrow at Doddington Hall. The competition theme this year was Magic, the children at Pre-Prep all submitted designs and two were chosen to be made into one scarecrow. The winners were Jaxon and Seth! Year 1 have worked really hard to use recycled materials and it looks amazing standing on it's head!
Year 2's 'Stone Age' topic culminated in a fantastic WOW event with the children coming into school dressed as stone age boys, girls and creatures! They worked in teams to light fires, forage for vegetables and made a very tasty stew. They also learnt how to make charcoal and used it to create their own art work. A wonderful day was had by all.
“I feel amazing! So happy and excited with my A*s across the board! I would like to go on to be a Research Scientist after university. I have loved my time at the school, everyone is so friendly and supportive, helping me to succeed without piling on the pressure.”

Henrietta W Year 3
Preparatory School Artist Of the Month:
The Preparatory School greatly enjoyed their visit to York last half term to see the amazing Vincent van Gogh exhibition. Henrietta started working on her oil pastel of Van Gogh's "Sower at Sunset" (1888) at the workshop in York and completed it back at School in her art lesson. She has shown exceptional observational skill capturing Van Gogh's use of colour and short strokes to create texture, movement and atmosphere. An amazing work for a Year 3 pupil. Van Gogh would be proud!

Miss McCallum's Top Tips for Boarding Parents
The Mount House
Messenger | March 2019
LMS Boarding
1. Establish good, clear communication with the House Parent. Ensure that you explain any special requirements or unusual behaviour that the HP may need to know, both for the child’s safety and general well-being. We work hard at getting to know your child and are grateful for the advice you can give. 2. I know it’s so difficult to let go so find out what the House routine is so that you’re not calling at times that are difficult to manage (prep, meals, shower, bed). Support your child but allow them some space to find their feet too. 3. They are allowed snacks but we do operate a healthy eating policy at LMS. A child who turns up and fills their cupboard with Haribo and then has to be told that they can’t eat them all at once is often the child that staff have to spend a lot of time managing. So send them to Boarding with an appreciation of the importance of a healthy body for a healthy mind. 4. It’s inevitable that your child will miss home at times. I would be confused and concerned if they didn’t. Don’t feel bad about it. Be glad that you have provided a lovely happy home to miss. We are constantly monitoring our Boarders well-being and we have lots of ways to help them, most importantly by explaining to them that it’s because you love them so much that you’re giving them this opportunity. Remember that 5 minutes after you have had a teary conversation with them, they will probably be laughing and playing with their friends, while you feel dreadful at home. We will always keep you updated and you can contact me if you have concerns. 5. Label ALL your children clothes!! And provide them with laundry bags for their underwear.
Tickets available via Wisepay or contact music@lincolnminsterschool.co.uk

U16 East Hockey Tournament took place on 15th October at Cambridge University, and was a fantastic day of matches. The LMS girls came in third, out of eight teams competiting. The results were: LMS v Bromely High 0-3 LMS v Bedford High School 2-0 LMS v Cooper Coborn 1-0 LMS v Haileybury School 0-3 Gary Johnson from England Hockey came into School on the 19th and ran a Hockey Masterclass throughout the afternoon for the Senior girls. A thought-provoking and inspiring session for all involved. It was a case of so close, when we hosted the U13 County hockey at the Lindum. Despite having all the play against Stamford, we just couldn’t score with the game ending 0-0. We were unfortunate to lose 1-0 to Bourne, however, had an excellent game against St Hugh’s winning 6-0. These results meant we finished 3rd in the group, just missing out on the Regionals. Results: U14 vs Worksop College 4-0. Player of the Match - Holly I U12 vs Westbourne won 4-3. Swimming success for LMS siblings
Preparatory pupil Zach and his Senior School sister, Chloe have both qualified for exciting events in swimming! Zach achieved an overall 2nd place in his age group in the club and also won the prestigious Hannah Berwick award which is presented to the swimmer who - throughout the season - works hard in training, listens to the coaches, develops their technique, and shows the right attitude to succeed. Zach has so far attained 2 county qualifying times for the County Championships in January/February and has several swim meets in November to increase this tally. Chloe was 1st place in her age group in the club for the 18/19 season and was also ranked the top girl overall in the club! Chloe has qualified to compete in three events - 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke and 200m backstroke - at the Midlands Short Course Championships in November. This competition is for the age group above Chloe’s so this is a great achievement. Chloe also has several qualification times for the Scottish Open Short Course Championships, which she is planning to attend in Edinburgh in December.

Military Parents Evening...
We pride ourselves on the positive feedback and ongoing support received from our extended school community, and both recognise and appreciate the value 'word of mouth' can play in further enhancing the reputation and standing of LMS across the country and beyond. Lincoln Minster School has a growing number of families from an Armed Forces background and we are exploring the following themes: What we currently do to support military families What we can do to improve our support of military families How we can best communicate our offer with military personnel who are moving into the area We would like to welcome current parents and their families who have experience of the Armed Forces and the school to join us for a Military Parents Evening on Thursday 21st November 2019 from 7.00pm at our Senior School site. The evening will include an address from Headmaster Mark Wallace and the chance to share feedback and ideas. Refreshments will be provided. Many thanks in anticipation of your support.
